Hi all
i am going to the lakes on 2nd August for 8 days on the shores of Windermere and am taking the yaks. I am going to mainly target perch on jigs/lures/DS, etc. I would appreciate any advice/tips as this is an area of yakking that I am totally new to! Not only the lakes but fishing big open waters!
Thanks in advance Ian

Great video Daz apart from the wrong lake and tactics lol!
I am going to stick on Windermere as I have good access to the lake from where I am staying. I am also staying on lures but after watching that I will get some worms for my lad if the going gets hard. He likes to do a bit of bait fishing but I am stuck in my ways.

We'll see Daz I am a stubborn so ad so? I have not used bait for the 8 years I have been chucking lures! Have you used lures in any of the lakes successfully?

I admire your conviction Ian and wish you all the best Soft, hard lures and flies is the way I like to fish too. I will use baits when necessary though, but don't get quite the same enjoyment or satisfaction as when lure fishing - that goes for my sea yakking too ! Have a great week and I look forward to your catch report, but I fear they are right about the worms

I will not succumb to the worms haha! One on the lure is worth 10 on the bait, well thats my philosophy anyway? I'd rather blank, and often do, rather than bait fish!
Its all about the take for me and feeling that hit is what makes me go back time and again!
Hope I have some piccys to show for my efforts? In fact I will persist until I do have some! There may be trouble ahead??

Good luck, let us know how you get on. I've always wanted to try the lakes. Defiantly take worms! If lures aren't working they defiantly will. No matter how good you are nothing wriggles like the real thing and you get the scent trail too.

I can categorically say no worms will be killed during my trip to the lakes. Certainly not by me anyway. But if the lad wants to go to the dark side then that is up to him haha!

I have used small meps on Derwent water and caught two wild brown trout, ive also used lures and caught pike on Ethwaite, trolling large deep divers seems to work well mate, the trout was caught inches from the surface and close to a sand bank with waves breaking causing a bit of disturbance Daz

Cheers Daz. I have loads of Mepps Aglias between 00 and No 3. My favourite spinners to be honest. I was thinking I might pick up the odd trout on spinners. The river ones I catch seem to like a quickly retrieved Mepps! I have bucket loads of small cranks, soft plastics and dropshot lures too! If I don't have what they want then it will be down to the fish or more likely me.
The trouble is with it being a family trip my time on the water will be somewhat limited to short sessions so I will have to make it count!

That was my plan Daz. Hopefully there are no restrictions on times I can launch. Philpot should know as he's been to the same site a few times.
Hopefully there will be a need to take plenty of pictures haha?

A pack of Isome worms may be the bridge between lure and bait Ian although I tried them on the rudd / roach last week in Suffolk without success but I think that was me not getting the best out of them.

Hi Ian, Unfortunately most of my time on Windermere has been spent winter piking, however I have just returned from fishing Derwentwater and Ullswater for perch. While I caught plenty nothing was above the 1lb mark . My usual tactic is to troll lures (small shad rap sapalas I have found work well up there) until I catch, then work the area casting lures (you could then drop shot instead). They are big waters especially Windermere, and locating fish not always easy. I found this year a lot slower than previous, whether that is down to the cold wet weather I dont know.......maybe just me. Anyway good luck, I will be interested in how you get on. If I wasn't heading back off shore tomorrow I would have tried to meet up for a paddle.

Cheers Mick
That was my plan to troll lures until I located the fish. Then slow drift with a drogue over the area with dropshot and jigs. With it being a family trip my sessions will be short taking in early mornings and evenings, and obviously weather dependent. Won't really have the time to fish other waters or target the pike so it will be short perch sessions all the way.
My other problem will be that I will be fishing with my 12 year old lad a lot of the time which will have me concentrating more on him than my own fishing! He is a competent angler, even from the yak, and has had some good fish but obviously it will be more for safety reasons!
As long as the weathers half decent I will enjoy being out on the water as my philosophy is that fish are a bonus!

Not f...ing happy. Some idiot t..t in a white van that goes round cleaning wheelie bins decided to reverse into my car. Bumper nackered and damaged the radiator (which is leaking) and probably more so I obviously can't drive it to the Lakes!
Struggling to sort a vehicle out at the moment through insurance capable of towing my van and having a rack on the roof to carry 2 kayaks!
At least it looks like I am no longer needing to worry about catching fish on Windermere anymore?
Gutted Ian!!

Cheers Andy. Recovered most of my money for the holiday so that is a plus so far. I haven't been able to source a vehicle as the claim is in the early stages and no liability has been accepted from the 3rd party. If I pursued a like for like vehicle, there is a possibility that I could incur some hefty hire charges if things don't go my way. This is a risk I am not willing to take. Feel like jumping on a plane and f...ing off for a bit as I am well pissed off and stressed out with the whole thing. Going to see if I can find somewhere else next to a lake where I can take the yaks as I do have a trailer which the wife's car is capable of towing.

Sounds good Andy but I work 3 out of 4 Saturdays! The one weekend in 4 I have off is usually family time and my fishing is usually done mid week. I'm sure there are others on here who might be able to get up there, if not for the weekend, then maybe for either of the days?

You will catch at this time of year down the shallow end with jerkbaits fished in the top layers, also you CANNOT night fish for pike, been told there is a good head of carp and bream though. plus thing for you though mate is you can paddle your groundbait out to a marker and fish to it at night building a realy good peg up , good luck !!

Cheers for the advise. Looks like it's going to be end of September time. I hadn't thought that with the yak, find a nice fishy feature with the ff and marker float it. Hopefully I'll be able to put up a catch report

So since my Lakes trip had to be cancelled we are now heading down to Cornwall for 8 days so it will be time to have a dabble at LRF. Can't wait to give it a go, unfortunately it won't be from the Yak!

There are so many places for you to drop shot or on the ultra lights Ian, it will still be good fun matey. If I don't talk to you before you go, have a good holiday.
