gentlemen its October and i need to be doing other things than sitting around waiting for the wind to drop .i know it is totally mad and all that but yep i am going to take up fishing again .well in fact i have started but its to early and i am failing at the mo
I suppose i will get the yak out and have a go for a cod if the wind drops and reluctantly i suppose i could go flounder fishing twice .Might squeeze in a bass trip down the harbour but in the main i will be coarse fishing down tut river .
if i could find some chub which i could catch from the kayak it would be nice but to be honest the successful areas for the big fish is miles upstream of the navacable fishable from a kayak area .
I will try one spot .
thing is some of you may have places you can fish the rivers and there are large chub present but you seem to fail to catch the fearfullest of fish .
Now the chub can be caught by many methods and it is my opinion all will have their day .
fishing from a kayak for chub is probably easiest if you trot a float introducing a handful of maggot every trot through ..you will build their confidence before to long and they will make a mistake.i would suggest four pound mainline to a 2 and a half pound bottom and dont be afraid to try the waggler as well as the stickfloat.if on the maggot i would use a size eighteen hook. You really need four pintsof maggot for a decent session say a pint an hour .
Now i will be doing a bit of this and a bit of that but it gets a bit costly to fish the float all the time so we use the feeder .
the feeder requires that the tip is still so from a kayak that is not easy but not impossible .i had a few experiments with the anchor during the summermonths in the river and found if you anchor real close in on a shortline then push a forty eight inch bankstick it just level with your feet it is just about stationary .i was float fishing though so has to be tested out ...so how to feeder fish for chub ....well its all about getting them going and nothing gets chub going like the humble red maggot .i always end up spilling them in the yak ...
i use braid mainline and braid hooklength in factalotofthe time i use four pound fireline for both .four pound fireline is the same diametre as one pound mono oh and just thought i would mention it ...actually breaks at nine pound on a bench test ..it really is awesome stuff.
my rod of choice is a meduim drennan supafeeder even at eleven foot is a bit long for a yak but any rod without to much backbone will do ,the current actually fights harder than the chub and it more a case of trying to get tenuious hookholds in just a sliver of skin to stay in than anything else .
heres a pic of my chub hooklength wallet you will notice some very short rigs ..................
how to fish it .....feeder stylee .......get some kamasan black cap feeders...known to the chub as mother creatures .pass the mainline throught the rings and slide on a couple of float stops- ledger stops whatever you like to call them and then pass the mainline through the hole in the cap of the kamasan blackcapfeeder .you will have to make a hole in the bottom of the feeder pass the main line through this thread on abead and tie on a swivel .....at this point you dont need a hook length or a hook .
fill the feeder and make a castwhere you want to fish if you can see chub milling about so much the better .
when it has been on the bottom foraminute wind it back in ....is it empty...good it fell on gravel if it fellon weedit wouldonly be partially empty ..you need gravel or hard silt .by january most of the river willbe weed free
recast and repeat for twenty minutes .if you dont get a BITE ..then its time to tie on a hooklength .hang on we didnt have a hook on .....arrrrh you can still get bites ......but we didnt so we are going to tie on a two foot hooklength you can use mono fluro or braid for this ..complete with a size fourteen drennan barbel hook !!!!!
onto the shank of the hook thread a drennan artificial red maggot and onto the bend of the hook putone or twolive red maggots ..Cast out and recast every ten minutes ...
we have been fishing for twenty five minutes now when wam the rod gets violently yanked forward to spring back immediatly .right there is nothing on there ...wind in and have a look at your hook bait ..its just the same plastic maggot and two live ones ..refill the feeder and recast .
wam almost immediatly wind in ..still no damage to the hooklength ...one more time ...WAM WAM ..Stillno damage ...okay lets catch a chub ...from that trace wallet select a one inch hook length tied from the fourpound fireline ...same routine with the hook plastic maggot on the shank this is for two purposes one to hide the hookshank and two if there are minnows or bleak about they cannot destroy the plastic maggot and the chub willstill take them ..we often dont bother with the live maggot on the hook if the smallstuff is bad .
so we are now casting out our anger rig and the next time the wam comes it stays attached ....as i have said the fight of a chub is not exactly fast or powerful although they are clever and will dive for cover the fireline will pull them out ...it is important to recast often when you get the fish going ..i often share a swim in the depths of winter and two feeders going in can really get them going .
this method is nothing new we have been using it for fifeteen years certainly not the only way to catch chub but certainly one of the best ..
if you can find them with a kayak then give it a go but if not dont be a slave to the yak have a winter session on the bank ..and by the way its just as cold
