I went for a bit of lure chucking on the Ancolme in Brigg yesterday only to find that the water had gone from clear to the colour of bisto with huge lumps of weed that have been dislodged now floating down the river some of which were the size of a double bed and many being trapped close to the bank rendering some of the pegs unfishable. The water level had also dropped approx 2' so it is going to take a little time before it is really fishable with lures or baits.
Due to the recent rain, the river has had the lock gated opened where it runs down to the Humber in readiness for any flooding which is the reason the levels are down so much.
I did manage a perch on the lure but that was all although I did see a really big fella just in front of one peg and I do mean big, well into the twenties but no chance of putting a lure in front of him as the weed at that peg was far to great, more the pity as I watched him splash the water in every direction as he saw me. Three guys were fishing with dead baits but had to fish close to the bank as the weed was just pulling their gear downstream.
Anyone thinking of making a trip to the Ancolme should leave it a while.
The positive in all this will mean that once settled, there will be less weed to contend with. I'm off to Suffolk next week for a weeks holiday so I have my fingers crossed that the river is back to normal when I return.
