I have used 12ft rods from my normal rod collection and managed ok, but the length of the but can make things awkward.
Some guys have cut down the butts to make them better. I have ended up getting hold of 10ft rods and they make life better until you start to run a stick float a long way downstream, then you find the limitations on trying to recover a long line on the strike. The trick is to try and make sure there is no bow in the line and dab your finger on the spool every now and then to keep as straight a line as possible to the float.

to be honest its what ever suits you, a 12 foot rod isnt the easyies to use from the yak but it sure helps when float fishing, best tip i can give you is to cut the butt down which i find helps alot Daz

I've only pike fished so far off my kayak and use 6ft carp stalking rods, only managed puke to 18lb so far on them but they handle it ok. May get some 7ft rods if I find the right ones.
