This is a specific photo competition for fly caught pike from a kayak. The competition is open to all registered members of Coarse Kayak Fishing. Fulling Mill are well known to any trout and salmon anglers as one of the premier producers of quality and innovative fly patterns. Most people though may not know that they also produce an excellent collection of predator and saltwater flies. Fulling Mill have kindly agreed to support this competition by donating two of their Guides Choice Pike fly selection – 12 flies boxed worth £59.95 each. This collection contains two each of their best six pike flies all safely stored in a fly box. The fly collection will be given to the best two photographs of your pike caught from a kayak. The decision will be made in two categories. 1. The heaviest pike caught. 2. The best photograph of the pike. At the end of the competition Coarse Kayak Fishing members will vote in category 2 to choose what they feel best represent fly fishing for pike. Please include as much detail with your photograph as you can BUT if it is a sensitive venue then by all means with hold the location. The competition will run from April 1st 2015 until September 30th 2015. For more details of Fulling Mill flies and other products please take a look at their online catalogue. www.fullingmill.com/core/media/media.nl?id=3140&c=3752701&h=d0871c5613f14874515f&whence=Or visit their website. fullingmill.comMany thanks to Fulling Mill for donating these prizes and in particular to Peter Gibson and Martin Ford for their support. Nice one Terry. Wish I could cast a pike fly now!
Do pike flies cast on fixed spool outfits count?

An even greater incentive to go to Rutland now!
And yes - I have managed to get myself through the gatekeeper.

I know someone who makes exceptional jig flies, Phil will back me up on that! He sells them at a reasonable price too.
Not really in the full spirit of things though, is it???
I have loads of jig flies, and have been using them a lot recently and have been reasonably successful with them so far and the maker has had pike to mid 20's on them including a scraper 20 caught recently.
I am not the greatest pike fly caster either, and that is being kind to myself, but have been meaning to make more of an effort so will be having a go now. I won't be submitting any caught by jig flies though! Mind you that fly collection does look good and I am a terrible hypocrite haha!

Good point Ian, did wonder myself after I posted if it was right or not. OK yes a jig fly is still kind of a fly but perhaps not in the true sense. One thing for sure, I'm not buying a pike fly outfit just so I can win some flies! well, I might lol

If you want some fly casting coaching I will get you going. I managed to get Paul casting 20 yards on his first morning with a fly rod....it is just timing, not power. Too much power actually REDUCES the cast. This is what you are aiming for !

Go on Sam you know you want too. I bought a cheap outfit quite a few years ago. Came with cheap line so bought some better line and sort of got going a bit catching a few small pike. I did manage an 18lb 3oz on the fly, bit of a fluke really. You would of thought that would have given me all the incentive I needed. I then never really used it for a while.
I treat myself to a decent outfit last year with the intention of doing more fly fishing for pike. Didn't happen so I am definitely going to do more this year.
Cracking fish BTW Dorado. Where do you live, I could certainly do with some help casting? I am ok on a trout rod casting nymphs but struggle like hell on my pike outfit with large flies.

I was just about to say "I can't because it wasn't caught this year". From my reading of the rules, the fish have to be caught between the stated dates. Those with nice camera mounts are at an advantage - tose are the only good pictures of me with a good fish ever - why is it when you give someone your camera you always end up with something not quite right. Philpott (or Daz?) took some of me last year with pike that were pretty good too, but it was a grey day. Good action shots though - they nearly always tend to be from quite far off. Lazyboy - right in th emiddle, Uttoxeter.

I don't envisage bothering the judges in all honesty. I don't have many waters locally that hold good sized pike particularly where I can launch my Yak. Who knows if I can get to Esthwaite???
Getting good photos is another problem for me too. Although this would probably be my only real chance of winning. I have a Gopro but still really at the learning stage. I suppose this gives me a chance.
To be fair I don't care what photos I produce but I just hope I can produce something worth entering.

The great thing with Gopro and others is that you can mount it, use it on video setting hold the fish for a few seconds and then take a still frame from the video. Ian, That is why we have the second category. The biggest pike do not always produce the best photographs. The markings and the anglers smile can make a better picture than a big one with an ugly bugger like me frowning. Your profile picture is hardly a jack pike! Terry

Fish caught a couple of years ago when I still had my boat. The place used to have a few good fish but reports suggest they are no longer there.
Struggling to catch anything big at the moment but still catching and enjoying it. Since I got into kayak fishing I have scaled things down a bit.
Out of interest Terry, what is the best way to set up my Gopro 3+ Black to give best slow motion but still give good results when taking a still from the video?

I have just seen - April until September. That does reduce the options somewhat.....summer piking isn't that great - early autumn I will start again.

A good point but possibly slightly misleading. Whilst the PAC and other organisations argue this the reasearch in fact shows that carp and perch are far less tolerant of low disolved oxygen than pike.
There is no special consideration given to carp and they are heavily fished for during hot weather and to my knowledge there is no significant rise in fish deaths.

Wow just joined the site and do a lot of fly fishing including for pike, also been kayak fishing for a year. Love it to bits but never fly fished from the yak yet. This will definitely be a go to method in September for me :-) may even have a go before then too.

Cheers Terry,
Going to have a go tonight but not on the yak this time. Had a little 4 lb pike on a fly a few weeks back just lovely. Working out my strategies with the Yak at the moment, the broads tonight are sectioned off and yaks not aloud (yet).
The River Waveney will probably be a perfect venue. Crystal clear at the moment good head of fish decent oxygen levels in lots of place. Miles and miles of paddling and fun to be had. Some nice perch to be had too.

Must have a chat with Glen regarding the Waveney as we were there a couple od weeks ago but the temperatures were way too high to fish for pike. I am back down end of Sept. when I want to walk the bank with the lure rod or rods but not sure which area is free fishing around Beccles.

Hi Phil,
The Beccles quay is out of action for fishing until the 31st October / 1st November time every year. Although you can walk the bank between the larger bridge (which is right next to the quay) and up to North Cove and beyond there are a number of openings to fish.
You can cross the other bridge at the bottom of the quay the smaller one and fish the other side down to Geldeston there are a number of spots you can cast a lure / bait. The little bridge often holds a lot of perch, not always big but there is always a reasonable chance of the odd good fish.
Way to warm at the moment in the day but come September and October they start to get much more aggressive and active.
