Brought my 1st drop shot rod and reel the other day (don't tell the wife!) and filled the reel with some 4lb mono I had lying about as I wanted to get out and have a quick go before dark. Is it best to use light braid with a mono tag end or mono straight though? One thought I had is if you have mono on the reel, when you come to pack up and discard the line at the hook you're throwing away a lot of line if you're fising a deep water and after a few times doing this you'll have to fill the reel up pretty soon. When I did get out I didn't get anything, only had a few casts but great little rod and can't wait to try it properly!

Most people use braid with a fluorocarbon leader. Like other forms of lure fishing it does help with the sensitivity and feel.
I like a coloured type so if fishing the drop shot at a distance I can see it in the water to give me an idea where my end tackle is.

That's the answer I was hoping for lol I prefer braid and a coloured type makes sense. I'll see what I can find. What kind of bs do you use?

I use the fox jig silk in about which has various BS available. I think mine is about 13bish. I wouldn't go higher than that IMO. I would have got the lighter BS but it wasn't available when I was buying.
I got this as it was one that was popular when I bought my DS rod, but to be fair it seems very good. I have had no problems with knots when tying to fluorocarbon. I use the albright knot recommended to me by someone off here, Terry I think. Very neat and easy to tie.

It must be out of stock everywhere. Typical of Fox products! Its usually about £14ish. Theres plenty of alternatives. As I said I only got that one because it was popular at the time and it was coloured.

You've got the Fox 1500 reel haven't you? Did the 120m of fox silk fill it ok or did you need to bulk it out?

I got the fox ultron rod and 1500 fox ultron reel. Found it as a combo deal. Not had much use yet and lost a very briefly hooked fish but seems a good rod with a nice sensitive but firm tip. Can feel every bump from the river/lake bed

i use 8-10lb braids and i dont use flouro ever ..its not needed in my local river as theres always some colour ..a short length of mono say 8lb will act as a cushion if you hook a large fish (ive had pike to 12lb on 6.5lb mono it happens !!)as braid has no (little)stretch..yellow or orange braids i find are easy to see on coloured water when casting across the flow

The fox braid that Ian has is NEVER available anywhere. For the past 18 months I have been using Dragon Invisible braid with no issues at all. Very limp and very thin, works a treat. I have been using 10lb but only 0.06mm thickness although it seems to be out of stock at the moment but you can contact Lure World to check when available. www.lure-world.com/invisible-braid-dragontoray-p-1997.htmlPhil
