Has everyone gone to sleep for the spring. No activity seems to be popping up on the forum at the moment or is everyone just plain busy with other things.
I have been scanning as much data as possible before I splash the cash on a LRF rod and I must say it has been the most difficult rod to sort of any rod I have purchased. I was out on the canal on Wednesday with Ian / lazyboy trying a couple of his LRF rods to help my thought process. One thing has become very obvious, this class of rod varies by a huge amount from maker to maker with action being so different it is untrue.
One rod that was really nice was the Daiwa Gekkabijin which is soft but somehow in it's construction it has a hidden strength whereas HTO Rockfish Revolution is quite stiff in the tip and lower down, now you would think a hard lure of say 1grm would cast further with this rod but not the case so the past knowledge of rod performances tends to go out of the window with these tiny lures.
I did at least decide on which reel to buy and ordered a Daiwa MX2004 from the Gekkabijin stable at a better price than I have seen anywhere. Along with the rod search I am looking for some thin braid 7 - 8 lbs, .04 - .06 dia but that is not easy to find and with many of them costing up to £40 in this sort of size, I do not want to have to buy twice because I got it wrong. Any suggestions in this area will be good and where you bought it.
I must say that the use of light gear and tiny lures has a great appeal and with what I have done so far, it has been very enjoyable. I'm off to Suffolk a week on Monday for a week and would really love to have sorted at rod to take with me as the lake is 10' away from my lodge with plenty of fish to play with on this gear as well as the usual carp rods.
If any of you do LRF and like the gear you use or don't like the gear, please give us your views and why plus the sort of fish you target.
I will say that I will without doubt I be buying another Dragon LRF rod in time but I think the Dragon rods will have a different take on LRF as they do in dropshot rods which is why I want an alternative to start with. The Dragon rods will I am sure be more that capable of taming pike and carp so opening up another variant to LRF with bigger fish.
