What are the rules for Grafham, any special kayak rules? I registered last night, looking forward to it. We will have to sort a meet or two before hand there, never been and would be nice to have a go before.

I am not sure at the minute if we will have access before the event. Some of the Europeans look to be coming. We could learn a lot from them. Terry

I've just had a look at the website via the LAS forum.
I must admit to being very tempted. August could be a very busy / expensive month the Pitsford Grand Slam is on the 6th & 7th.

I know that feeling. For once though, unlike Swanage and Oxwich, the travel costs for me will be a lot less.
Both great venues though with the potential of a lot of fish to be caught.
They will also show to Anglian Water that there is a lot of money to be made from kayak angling and in turn it may make other venues consider hosting us. Trout fishing in general has levelled off and fisheries are always looking for more customers. This is an argument I have been using a lot in negotiations.

I was toying with going after someone asked me at llangorse but dismissed it when I read the rules. Thought I was possibly over reacting and just read them again... I think I'd be scared to fart, it's seems too serious for me.

I've just booked on Shaun.
The rules do seem a bit petty, but when you re-read them a couple of times, they are just common sense really.
I'm looking forward to the experience to be honest, In the past I was a very keen match angler, so I love the big competition buzz.
Grafham here I come !!

Just for the fun of it,plus you canget the entry fee back on the lowrance kit, I know I'd come near last as you need the practice to get up to speed on the place, but for those who have fished it ( too skint ) you have the chance to do really well. If I had time and cash , I'd try to go for a practice and then enter I know. Bet it will be a nice site.

See you there Jonah Never even caught a perch on a kayak either! But then again until Llangorse practice day I'd not had a pike on my yak and I managed third. Might not practice zander or perch fishing and hope for beginners luck again

Never fished deep freshwater before, I aim to try asking around for tips, maybe the lads who have been on rutland will pass on a few tips, mistakes not to make, etc, waters should be similar. Anyway as said before it should be a laugh, I,m just going to follow mark lol.

50gm jig heads on braid, fished vertically with 4-6" soft shads. Green often the favoured colour. Just lift and drop a few inches. Terry

Did it need to be 50gm? or was it because of a bit of drift? Ive got some very thin braid on one reel and had though to take up to 35gms - now I ,ve got to get some bigger ones , still I,ve got a while to sort and plan lol

Ive got some very thin braid on one reel and had though to take up to 35gms - now I ,ve got to get some bigger ones , still I,ve got a while to sort and plan lol There's no set rules for jigging for any species although heavy jigs will be required the actual Weight needed will vary. Depth of water, speed of drift and resistance caused by line and lure drag are all to be factored in. From what I've read when sander fishing your aim is to keep the lure fishing as vertical as possible, the heavier the jig the easier this is to achieve and it will also enable you to be more in touch with the lure. I'll knock a few 45gm jigs up for you FOC if you wish.

That's exactly it Shaun. Keeping the braid vertical and combating any drift is vital. The tactics I quoted are the Rutland tactics for zeds but I believe Grafham is a little shallower so 50 may not be obligatory but it IS important to have direct contact and be able to tap bottom and feel every touch.

Terry Well, I use 3g to 7g jig heads when fishing for zander on the canals and I can feel the bottom, so it also depends on the rod you're using as well as the depth of water I believe:) 1g per foot of depth is some what of a guidline, but I tend to use a bit less than that more often than not. I'm no expert, by any means, but sometimes lighter weights can help you achieve more natural presentation and it all comes down to what the fish are after on the day.

Just found Grafham water depth chart, by the looks of it I'll have to stock up on 30-50g jig heads and then just see on the day what's best to use, but will probably end up using 35-40g for most of the day as I just like to go as light as I can usually.

Taking it further Romas the hotspot area at Rutland is between 60 and 80 foot hence the big jig heads, add to that the winds that blow there it is hard to slow the drift right down so the heavier weight are needed. I guess Grafham would have the same problems.

I only had small jigs, not sure on the weight, but by the time it hit bottom it was far from a vertical line! What's a good hook size to go for?

3/0 4/0 to carry the weight and suit the lures along with a stinger.
