Got a swift response saying that kayaking is not alowed due to the water being site of special scientific interest... can't see how they can use their boats with petrol outboard engines on it then... will have to find some info on paddling the sssi's and come back to them...

Some of Anglians waters have SSS!'s and they still let us on.

I have spoken with Nature England who manage SSSI's and they say that "in principle" the do not see an issue in kayaks being allowed on SSSI's where there is already waterborne craft.
For this to happen though the controller of the site has to apply for a change in the guidelines.

Although some SSSI's only allow a fixed number of craft. One trout fishery I spoke to said the get two fishermen on a boat, if a kayak went on the water they would have to take a boat off the water. In order for them not to make a loss they would have to charge the same cost of two trout day tickets and a days boat hire! Not really practical.

It may be worth contacting Nature England and asking them what the specifics are of Hanningfields SSSI and ask what their view would be if a request for kayak access would be.

Please note any formal enquiry will only be accepted from Hanninigfield's management.

Thanks Terry, just spent an hour and a half looking for an information you just gave us I've checked the Natural England database for Hanningfield and came to the same conclusion. I will try and contact them tomorrow to enquire on what their position might be, so I can put it forward to Hanningfield and see what they have to say about that.

It's always good if you have the ammo to counter their arguments but always in a polite way.

I have just tried to find the email I got from Natural England but it has vanished. I printed it out for one meeting with Anglian and it shocked them that I had done so much research.
It showed I was professional and serious and not just an idiot who did not understand SSSI's.

It's also worth mentioning the Cleaning protocol that we have to abide by on Anglians fisheries and tell them we would be happy to work to the same standard.

When I first did a demo for them I had made up a spray bottle of diluted Jeys Fluid and would them that on returning home I always washed the kayak down with it to ensure no micro organisms from a water survived. Although making sure the kayak is thoroughly dry will kill most bad bits along with sunshine and as we carry the kayak on the car they get exposed to a lot of UV light.

Got response from Hanningfield, they seem to be open to the idea, but the biggest issue I believe is going to be, as Terry mentioned, limited number of craft allowed on the water at any one time. Nicked couple of quotes from you Terry, I hope you won't mind...

That's the whole idea of the stickers posts with help and advice on access mate.

I want people to use them and help us get more waters. That is the only way the freshwater side of the sport will grow.

Step by step we are getting there and if I can help a bit than I am happy.

The big thing is to make sure that when we publish details we cover all the rules etc so that no one cocks things up for us.
