Hi all, Last years Rutland trip convinced me that the next time I do a bit of vertical jigging on a large res... i'm going to need a tool to do it better. Standard lure rods in both 7 and 9ft wouldn't cut it when i needed to 'feel' everything that was going on a 70ft down and set the hook when a tap tap occurs. So... Ive got too many rods as it is but i'm sure I can squeeze another. But I don't want to spend more than £40-£45 as i'm only going to use it once or twice a year. Any advice welcome please. Ta Alex PS. Terry. Can't seem to change 'Big Badge Wearer' you naughty administrator you. Wanted something like 'COYS' or something

Ha, just seen. Very funny Terry. Although your terminology may offend some my friend.
Have to beat the relegated Toon... don't we?
Anyway... Nobody got any blinking advice on jig rods then?

Alberto, For vertical jig fishing particularly on deep waters you really need a fast or extra fast action rod. To confuse matters manufacturers give their vertical rods a casting range which may for instance be 15 to 35g however this does not mean that the rod will only fish a vertical jig up to 35g, there's a good chance you could go as high as 50g as you are not subjecting the rod to casting stresses. You also have the option between fixed spool or multiplier rods I'm finding the multi to be better as the jig can simply be dropped off the revolving spool smoothly and as fast or slow as your thumb allows, in addition there's less chance of line twist as well. I could not really recommend a new rod within your price range as I have not tried one since a couple of my first rods which are now not available new, but I would recommend buying second hand. I have used and enjoyed a Dragon Millennium zander rod (do not confuse with the cheap carp dragon company), there may even still be the odd one about which use to sell around £45. Another good buy is anything made by Fox, they are really underrated and have made some really good rods over the years. I've had the Fox elite jig rated 20g and 35g, the 35g will fish a 50g jig head on a 5" shad fine.

Thanks for this advice pal, appreciated. Been looking at Fox stuff and Dragon also. Think Dizzyfish did a review of that rod... but sadly I couldn't find one at that price. I'll keep searching. Cheers

Did you get a rod sorted in the end Alberto? Toying with the idea of getting one too, been looking at the fox range but can't decide.

Hi Andy. That Fox is on my watch list too But I'm getting quite warm on the idea of a Dragon one (Toray blank) at about £50 plus pnp. I'll keep you posted.

Been looking at the Korum Snapper jig rod, nice price at £35. It says "The rod’s rating of 5gms - 15gms is perfect for casting light jigs on canals, to jigging from a boat on large reservoirs." Now like Esoxuk mentioned, although it's rated to cast 5-15g could it handle jigging a 40/50g jig vertically.....? My guess is it would be too soft for that much weight but how can you tell?

I asked questions on this rod and was told it wasn't really up to the job of vertical jigging so I took a swerve. Yeah, too soft and not enough response when trying to set hooks in depth.

My fox rage Ultron vertical jig rod came in the post today very crisp action but still has a nice progressive fighting curve. Feels relatively well balanced with my 3000 stradic ci4 but reckon I'll have to put a little lead in the butt cap to balance it out as the reel is so light. Initial thoughts is that it's worth the price tag.
