Hi all,
I've got some diving lures with barbed trebles and wondering if they're too big for perch and more suited to pike.
They're around 4 inches long and have a single treble hook on the end. Also have slightly longer ones (around 5-6 inches) with 2 treble hooks.
Do you guys think they'll be too big for the perch?
Basically, I'm a complete beginner at fresh water...done a little sea fishing when I was younger so I don't know much at all.
Cheers

Think you may have got your hook sizes the wrong way round there Phil lol? 4" isn't too big for perch but lures larger than say 3" have a tendancy to attract pike more than under 3". I would mostly target perch on lures 3" and under unless I know the venue holds some bruisers! If you are just starting out then spinmad are good as Phil said. Copper Mepps in sizes 1,2 and 3 are a good bet. In soft plastics I would start with something around 1.5 to 2". Loads to choose from but as Phil said, Kopyto's are a good lure. Too many other good ones to start listing on here but I can't recommend the L Bait Fat Minnow from www.snapbaits.co.uk highly enough. There service is fantastic too. I would never go perch fishing without these in my bag! AGM is as good a site as any to get you started, particularly for jig heads and soft plastics. www.agmdiscountfishing.co.ukRough guide to soft plastic hooks below. This is a rough guide depending on the lure and type of hook. This is something you will learn over time. Soft PlasticLength Hook Size 1 – 3 Inch 6, 4 3.5 – 4 Inch 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0 4.5 – 5 Inch 2/0, 3/0 5.5 – 6 Inch 3/0, 4/0 6.5 – 7 Inch 5/0, 6/0 7+ Inch 7/0, 8/0 Good luck Ian

Nothing wrong with that as a starter pack of soft plastics!

Ahhhhh senior moment there sorry, I should have said 2'' - 2/0 hook, 3'' - 3/0 hook etc etc.
It was very late when I posted Ian, about 1am..............................you have to make allowances for the elderly.
Hope the info generally apart from my slip up was of some help.
Lazy Boy (Ian) has made some superb lead head lures which perhaps he will post so you can see the sort of lures which work well with both pike and perch.
Phil

I'm in Cambridgeshire.
I've been out today with Greygoose for around 4 hours.
We suspect something took the tails of 2 of my 3 soft plastic shads.

I will have you all know, it took Ian quite some time to transfer all the jigflies in and out of that perch's mouth................................sorry mate, couldn't resist.
I have some of these jigflies and Ian has done a lovely job, after seeing them, I wished I had not sold off all my fly tying gear.

Will pop your picture up dave when I get time Dave, nice to meet you ,bit quite for the perch but nice to get out. Didn,t land one , had a follow or two under the new bridge ,but no hits, a puzzle on your paddle tails getting chopped off but no obvious take, small zander will nip at the end of lures and as I said that deeper section holds a few ,odd though. Do make yourself a couple of mud anchors though ,better on the river than a grapple.See Terry's post as a basic idea. Chris

Indeed. Was good to meet you too mate.
I had a look at the anchor thread earlier today...seems cheap and easy.
I'll have to buy some armor plates for the tails or something! Lol

Camped in my car for a meet on the Broads. Always good to try new venues and meet new faces. Good job on getting out but shame on no hook ups.... Next time! I've been wanting to get out for months now but things keep popping up
