Hello everyone , been lurking but time to contribute. heres a thread I posted on another forum ..... work in progress as I'm sure this little river has some good fish!! I'll update if I ever get the illusive specimen
OCTOBER 2011
Preparation is the key to everything my old boy used to say Anyway theres a small tributary of the wye which flows almost passed my front door and fishes well for small browns and grayling and the occasional late season salmon however in my pre kayak days I'd nip down in winter for a few hours and as long as you kept well hidden you'd wrangle out a few decent chub , my Pb being around 3.5lbs .
My impending knee op on tueday got me thinking , and as i'll be out until the esthwaite comp I've dusted down my coarse rod ;D I've been prebaiting a lovely overhung deep run which is only about 20yards long , with 20 or so black slugs every 3 days or so since I got back from the three tarns. nipped down this morning with a few more and yes , theres chub there ;D ;D and a couple a lot bigger than my best
The river only fishes as the colour is coming out , was too clear today. Runs down off the hills and colours with rain in a matter of hours , also clears just as fast. heres a shot of probably the biggest pool on the river , which holds salmon late september but also is well watched as its 5 minutes walk from town centre. My spot is a few miles upstream , only about 6 -8 yards wide. Patience is the key to this project ;D ;D Near by the wye the usk foundation have some lovely fly only water on day ticket
NOVEMBER 2011
pottered down today for a couple of hours with a few slugs , a slice of bread and half a dozen worms. Started off trotting a float but struggled to get into position with my gammy leg Had two small trout on worm before switching over to a freelined slug. Immediately had a small chublette , folowed by a slightly bigger one around 2lbs i guess (piccy to follow if i can find the blackberry cable). Water was a bit murky and it was bloody cold!! Bit dissapointing really
JANUARY 2012
bit arty dont you think - dont normally mess around with photo software but the blackberrys camera isnt very good
Well the floods have undone the good work so that big illusive chub will wait till spring. The grayling have responded to the colder weather though and took a couple on a heavily weighted nymph fished short. Beautiful fish and apparently good eating but could never bring myself to kill one
so there we have it , been down a couple of times this week and had quite a few Grayling but those big chubb still allude me. Got a weeks leave to take so watch this space!!
