As i will be fishing Loch Awe i'd like to have a crack at a ferrox .I know deep trolling is the method ,i dont have a down rigger but have toyed with the idea of using my skate rod and say a 3lb lead as a downrigger and attatching a big spoon via a big game clip .My other thought was a paravane but im unsure if the weight of a big spon would trip it any thoughts. Also i know theres a good head of artic char in there do you think trolling a set of small sabikis deep would catch them

As you might guess Lozz, not my field but some years ago I used to take my caravan up to Windermere. The owner/manager was a big pike and char angler. I remember him telling me that he used to troll for the char deep down. Here are the site details and his name was John, it may some use to you as a contact. This place is deserted during the week days and very active at weekends with water sports. easy launching too. www.hillofoaks.co.uk/Hope it is of some use. Phil

Hmm. I have around 20 downriggers Lozz. From the big ass electric ones to the smaller ones. Whether they'd be suitable on the yak I don't know but if you want to try one please feel free. I bought up a lot of stuff when the warehosue closed down and these are sitting here doing nothing because I haven't got around to ebaying them.
No idea what weight you'd need but I only have one and that's around 10-15lb and would be a bitch to hang under you. If you can make them though it'd be worth experimenting.

Not sure how you would handle 3lbs of lead hanging over the side Lozz, it would take some paddling to keep in a straight line. I bet you could get along with a lot less weight after all you are not going you be paddling any great speed.
That would be one hell of an achievement to catch a ferox from a yak. Good Luck
