Small self wieghted float, 20 hook and single small maggot used the top section of an old rod as a whip ,fine hemp based ground bait used small ball every cast, caught loads , people fishing all around for bigger fish caught nowt, sometimes just catchings fun, no matter what and my little boy at the time 5 ,loved it and still does.

When the canals are fishing hard in the winter months i use liquidised bread for attracting the fish and breadpunch for hook bait. This is fished with a 4 m whip to .06 diameter hooklength tied to a 22 fine wire hook. The float is a very light crowquill fished waggler style. This is a great method which I've had a lot of success in matches with and while primarily intended for roach it is good for bream as well

Used to do a bit of match fishing until the kids came along, and on a rock hard water at this time of year went down to 1.1lb bottoms and size 26 hook, with a small pole float taking 3 no 11 weights. Probably wouldn't be able to see a 26 nowadays let alone tie a whip finish with freezing cold hands.

Years ago on the Nene, 1lb straight through on a pole with a the line 'spiralled' between to sleeves, 22 hook and a pinkie bleak snatching with a match stick as indicator, fishing straight to hand. Loose feed pinkies.

Mark I remember one winter league match on the oxford arm which was very shallow I could see from the near bank to the far bank and there was zero fish in my swim the whole match... no-one in my section weighed-in I knocked match fishing on the head very soon after that I used the small hooks on the Nene northbank again a winter league match, again no-one in the section weighed in those were the good old days

When we used to fish the winter leagues on the canal about 15 years ago there were thousands of motherless minnows which some of the teams set their stall up for. They were using specially made 2 meter whips and very fine gear. They had to catch hundreds of these things to make the scales register. That with the huntspill fishing hard as well spelt the end of my winter league days. Thankfully both venues fishing a lot better now.

The lightest gear I can remember is a garden cane and a cotton bobbin with my mums best bit of sylco cotton and a bent pin for a hook and 4 long match sticks stuck together for the float. Fishing in Graves Park in sheffield for sticklebacks but that was 51 years ago , think I caught roach and perch on that little set up if my memory serves me well. Eeehhh them were the days Phil

When I was around 8 or 9 my dad use to set me up with a cane, cotton, matchstick float and tie the worm on... greedy perch lifted gently don't let go.
