I thought I'd see if I could spark some interest in using a kayak to do overnighters from the bank on my local Ouse!
Where I live there are a lots of inaccessible parts of the river, and since I usually only have time for quick overnighters, the yak made more sense to me than lugging about an inflatable and having to rely on an electric motor etc.
I've had a couple of trips now and I feel I'm pretty sorted. I'm using 10ft rods which are short enough not to poke off the front end when on the move, and take a two piece net handle, fold up net and four long banksticks, and I have a small one man tent and inflatable mat, although I think I may have to ditch it and go for a lightweight camp bed as it is giving me chronic backache!
I make sure I fill up with food and drink before I go, so I only need to take 2ltr of water. I've also got a water filter but haven't been brave enough to use it on the river yet! I take a tiny little meths stove too as I do need my tea!
I have a B+Q tool box which houses a bit of food, tackle, little radio, cooking pot and mug, alarms etc - this fits perfectly in the back of the boat, and then I have small drybag with my sleeping bag and pillow case (stuff it with my jumper to make a pillow). I use my unhooking mat as a seat and then all my bait goes in a bucket between my legs.
Overall I'm pretty happy with my set-up now, but I'd be keen to hear any suggestions which might lighten or lessen the load even more!
I've had my yak a year but have only been on it twice since I had a long term ear infection which prevented me from going in the water, but now there's no stopping me I'm going to give the river a really good crack this summer, I've found a few likely spots which have given me some nice fish already, and the bonus is that they are free fishing and you never see another angler!
Does anyone else use their yak to fish this way? Or am I the only one?
