What rod/rods do you guys use for your float fishing for your yaks?

I have been using one of these: www.gooutdoors.co.uk/shimano-forcemaster-float-10ft-p196185I like it and so long as you are not trotting too far it is fine. It does have limitations though. Yesterday on the Trent trotting a stick I was picking fish up a long way down river. I have a new lot of 100mtr line on my reel and I ran so far down I could see the spool. Line pick up at that time was poor except when I had been 'holding back' and there was no bow in the line. I hooked some but missed a few too. All in all though I think even with a 12 or 13ft rod I may have had the same problems. It is a convenient size for most applications. The build qualty is spot on and it is very light, as you would expect from Shimano. Terry

The garbolino 10' rocket pellet waggler is a superb Rod for the money (around £35). Picks the line up well and has just the right mix of forgiveness and power for a great all rounder. At 10' any rod will struggle with line pick up at distance and the reason Terry missed a few is that he can only see 10 yards

Ha I knew you'd like that one mate Managed to get hold of a camo s/pro as want to do a bit more exploring of the river with a dsi unit. I'm rigging it over the next week or so Terry and will post some pics.

Lately I've been using a 10-40g Fladen Vantage 8ft rod. Overpowered for silvers but superb for the larger fish and it casts a 3bb or 5bb waggler far enough from the yak to suit.
Because I generally dabble for the smaller ones I've just ordered a Fladen Maxximus IM10 carbon 2-16g 6.5ft rod to play with. It's a special order item not currently carried in the UK (it's coming over from Sweden in a couple of weeks) but who knows, if it ticks the boxes we may see some more of them. I'm quite excited by it, it's going to be a lot of fun.

I have read a few reviews on the fladen tackle they seem quite underrated. Have you ordered it online or is there someone near you that stocks them

I'm sponsored so I just email the MD. There are loads of places to buy from though, amazon is probably the easiest though. I changed over from all my shimano and rapala gear in January, with trepidation I must admit, but it's either 10 or 11 pbs and 3 new species since then and it's yet to let me down, sea or river. Some of the kit is superior to my old stuff and some too different to compare but on balance I couldn't have chosen better - but I chose what I wanted so avoided the budget stuff they do whichj they tend to be judged upon.

Youknow Mark, it would be very interesting to list out which kit you chose for both fresh and salt in terms of a brief review or marks out of ten type of thing. Like you, I have several pieces that I was careful about buying and cannot fault them so far.
In my opinion, the stuff sold in budget shops tends to be the cheapo gear that people get see and regard all their gear as poor when in fact it is not.

One thing I found yesterday was that using a 10 footer in swims of 10-11foot was a bit awkward on the kayak. A telescopic pole would be ideal.

I used to use a pair of 10ft match rods...I cut one down to 7ft. was superb for 'using' but the casting was affected a lot and the reduced range gave it limited options.
