Next year's kayak grand slam at Esthwaite is now booked in place, 2 day event held on Saturday 31st May & Sunday 1st June. Esthwaite have kindly agreed to reducing the ticket price from £50 to £40 for the 2 days fishing with free camping by the lake. More details to follow but like this year's event I'll be making it as simple as possible, next year though I'll be allowing trolling and the use of deadbaits. Watch this space, can also follow on Facebook www.facebook.com/EsthwaiteKayakGrandSlamCheers, Sam

Nah, caravan Daz, creature comforts and security for the kayak. Most B&B's have little parking so don't fancy leaving the kayak on the roof where I can't have it safe.

I'll have a word with Dave at Esthwaite regarding the use of a caravan Phil, hopefully it won't be a problem.

Forgot to mention earlier Phil but Esthwaite got back to me and said you'll be ok with the caravan, if poss try to avoid using an awning, etc so it doesn't look like a campsite Hope that works for you bud.

This year's Esthwaite Kayak Grand Slam isn't far away so figured it was high time I posted some details/rules. Last year's match was very simple, this year even more so! Right then, the match details: Saturday May 31st & Sunday 1st June The match will be spread over two days, match briefing will be held at 9am Saturday at Esthwaite's slipway (should take all of 5 mins!). Match starts 10am Saturday with fishing till dusk (no night fishing) Match will continue from dawn on Sunday. Match will end at 4pm with catch reports handed in by 4.30m(ish). Means you can choose the best times to fish, ie: call in for some food early evening then head back out for the last few hours of light. Entry fee has been reduced this year to £40 per person covering you for the two day event. Pay on the Saturday when you arrive before the match briefing. Once the prize presentation is finished anyone that wishes to stay and fish till dust is welcome to (might as well get your monies worth!) FREE camping is available by the lake at the car park area 100yds from the office though if possible please put the tents up as late as you can and bring them down as early as you can on the Sunday (don't want the general public thinking it's a campsite). I appreciate it's a slight pain but small price to pay for free camping. An idea would for anyone fishing at sunrise Sunday would be fish for a few hours then pop back to shore at 8am ish for a spot of breakfast and take the tent down then. RULES: 1/ Please make sure you have the proper unhooking tools (forceps, pliers and if possible an unhooking mat) 2/ You can have as many rods as you like setup but can only use one rod at any one time. 3/ Must have a photo of your catches otherwise your catches can't be accepted Photographes of fish must have a clear view of the nose to tail on the measure, just avoids problems at the end of the day and could make the difference of winning a prize! 4/ Someone that gets the full grand slam (Pike, Perch & Trout) will win even if the combine length is smaller than say a Pike and a Trout. 5/ No live baiting Everything else is just commonsense, such as please help if another competitor requires assitance photographing/weighing fish. Fish welfare is paramount. That sort of thing. That's it! You can use lures, fly, deadbaits, and trolling. Can't get much simpler that that! Cheers, Sam

What a bargain to fish a top quality venue. I paid £70 3 years ago for 2 of us to lure fish from a boat for 1 day. Ok it included the boat but 2 days and free camping is unbelievable value.
I am on holiday that week and if we don't go away for the week I might try to get there. Or maybe I can get the boss to go to the lakes for a week. Kill 2 birds with one stone and then get divorced.

Some people think that £40 is quite expensive but when you consider a day ticket plus boat is about £40 for one day plus with the free camping I think it's very reasonable. Really lok forward to this year, fishing should be spot on by then

Bad planning Daz, that will only carry the lures. Where the hell would you carry your main kayak and the two towed lure carrier kayaks. Phil

To help raise some extra few pennies for Heroes On The Water UK I'll be auctioning off a special 'Hot Rod' Pike lure at this year's Esthwaite Kayak Grand Slam. As far as I know it's the only one in the UK so a rare thing so I expect some healthy bidding!

Morning guys, if poss please could people confirm if you are going to Esthwaite comp today/tomorrow. Just so I can give Esthwaite an idea on numbers so they can provide the right amount of free booze and food (I explained 'LOTS' would do!)

Never caught a brown trout or perch from the kayak.
Hopefully will address that next weekend.
Doubt the fly rod will be coming out though!

On my last day of a weeks holidays in the lakes. Didn't take the yaks, family holiday, what a mistake. The wife said I could but it would have got messy!
Saw kayakers out on Derwent Water and Windermere. Conditions looked perfect, light breeze with good water visibility.
Conditions are looking very good for the weekend. Dead jealous but hope you all have a great weekend.
