Hi Ian and welcome mate. I am just down the road in Leicester. You have made the right start by joining the BCU/Canoe England. You now at least have access to navigation to the canal network, The Broads and most of the rivers network. Next thing is to make sure the club controlling the waters you want to fish allow fishing from a kayak. Not all do. Forgive me if I am teaching my grandmother to suck eggs but I will give the basics. Always wear a PFD, dress for the conditions, at this time of year we usually wear a dry suit. Canals and Rivers Trust rules say you should always be moored to the tow path when fishing. Many of the stretches are day ticket so you should be OK. So you need a right of access, an EA rod licence and a day ticket. What kayak do you have? There are modifications you can make to make it more fishable, anchor trolley, fish finder etc. Ask questions mate there is a lot of knowledge here and the guys are happy to help. Terry

Hi Terry and thanks for your reply.
I have a T13 and have been kayaking for a while, just not fresh. Most of the East coast guys know me already.
Interesting point you made about having to moor to the towpath when fishing. Guess that's trolling out the window then! Initially it will be to take my son out for a paddle to get him used to the kayak. Will be purchasing a 2 man yak for the purpose. Probably get a Fatyak Mahee off Stonefish.

I have a Mahee and they are a good value kayak. I know Stonefish well he is a good guy and will see you right. The ruling is because of the danger of not being where a barge might expect you. You probably find, like me, the best laid plans and weather forecasts all go wrong when you have spent a couple of hours getting to the coast and you have wasted a trip. Freshwater gives an alternative.....river levels and ice permitting. Me and Daz have fished various Fenland drains keep an eye on the threads you are welcome to join us. You obviously are fully aware of dangers and gear required so I will shut up on that . We also have access to a stretch of the Trent near Newarke on a £40 season ticket as well as Ravensthorpe for the next 6 weeks or so the Ravensthorpe and Pitsford next season. We are constantly trying to get more waters. No doubt you will read various threads here about places to go. As I say ask away and come out with us if you want to fish and chat about tactics. Terry
