Luke,
Welcome to the site mate.
The coarse site of our sport is growing more slowly than with the salty lads. I think a major problem is access to waters. If there are waters in your area that welcome us put them in the venues section and one or two may like to come and join you.
Keep an eye open there are some lads in the Home Counties amongst us.

The only water I know is the river lea in my area. The bailiff has even cycled straight past me on a number of occasions as fishing permits a chargeable from the bank and people fishing from canal boats aren't charged, so neither am i. Its advertised as the towpath fishery. Top locations include Dobbs weir in Hoddesdon and folly island at hertford. There are lots of secluded smaller tributary rivers only accessible by kayak that are also very good for a paddle. I couldn't rate it any more. There are plenty of fisherman on the banks who are very friendly. Ive been handed beers from people on canal boats. but i am the only kayak fisherman in sight.

Luke,
If by the Lee you mean the Lee Navigation then the supposition that canal boats do not pay to fish is completely wrong mate.
The water is controlled by the Canals and Rivers Trust who then lease the fishing rights to clubs. If someone wants to fish from a boat or a kayak/canoe then firstly it must be moored to the towpath ( CRT Rules) and they must have a permit from the controlling club plus an EA rod licence. Trolling, fishing from a moving boat/kayak or moored anywhere other than to the towpath is not allowed. No anchors are permitted. Clubs have the right to ban any fishing other than from athe actual bank. If fishing from a kayak then first off you must have a navigation permit either direct from CRT or via kayak membership of the Angling Trust or British Canoe Union membership.
Sorry mate if this is different to what you have been led to believe but these are the rules as they currently stand I am afraid. I am a member of an advisory group to the CRT and as such I am 'duty bound' to make sure the facts are clearly publicised.

Well i must not have my facts straight. I have an EA rod license. I have the fishing permits for parts, as im a member of ware angling club. As for the rest, I hope the bailiff keeps on cycling past me. I do need the CRT kayak membership. can you send me the page link of where to purchase this? I was a bit confused on which type of licence to buy. There is such a minority kayak fishing on rivers or still waters it takes one to know one before you find certain things out. i only got my kayak 6 months ago so still learning all about it really. as for the fishing side of things, Ive been doing that since i was a nipper.

Luke, The easiest way is BCU membership. www.canoe-england.org.uk/membership/membership-types/This gives you 3rd Party Insurance and a navigation permit to all CRT water plus Environment Agency waters in the East Anglia region and thee Broads Authority. Whereas the AT permit only covers the CRT waters. As you say we are in a minority which is good in many ways. We are a curiosity to a lot of boaters and bank anglers . The big thing we have to do is make sure we behave in a manner that keeps us beyond reproach. Some paddlers that have gone before us have 'rocked the boat' with their behaviour. Good Luck Luke get some reports up, people are motivated by seeing what we can achieve by acessing swims that the normal angler cannot. Terry
