Kell and myself went out on here yesterday, mainly to have a look round and try out an access point that Kell had been told about off Wheatley Hall Road. We could get the cars almost up to the canal, but I think next time I would use the wheels and pull the kayak down off the road, its level and only a couple of minutes walk. The access to the water was very easy and the water is only ankle deep at the launch point. Its an easy paddle back up into the centre of Doncaster, passing Strawberry Island Marina as well as a new disused marina before getting to the moorings at the town end. Boats moored at Strawberry Island. Town centre moorings. We found plenty of fish on the fishfinders and caught a few perch on dropshots, even though the wind was very strong blowing us about a bit as we did'nt take any anchors with us. Never mind though I'm sure its going to be a good venue, I fished it off a portabote a few years ago and had plenty of jacks, perch and chub out on lures, for bait anglers there's a good head of bream, tench and roach and some of the biggest gudgeon I've ever seen. The water is controlled by Doncaster AA and when I fished from my boat the local bailiff was usually at the town end and was happy to sell you the day ticket at around £4, here's the link to their website ddaa.co.uk/Phil

I take it Phil that the closed season doesn't affect this venue.
I have passed over this water many times and looked at several points around the industrial estate as being suitable for a bit of pike fluff chucking.
Let me know when you are going again mate and if free I will join you.
Phil

Can't do this weekend Phil, it looks like a caravan weekend and I'm hoping to get on the Driffield canal system if the weathers fit. Phil

Hi Daz There's a couple of more secure places to park to get access into the canal. The first is the public car park off Friars Gate Doncaster, the town centre moorings shown above are at this point. The other is at Clay Lane West Doncaster there's a CRT car park alongside the lock there, you can launch from there or around 50m towards Doncaster there's a couple of very easy access points at water level. Both of these and the entire canal is under the control of Doncaster AA, day tickets are available from the bailiff if he is around. I haven't had any issues using the kayak or portabote on the canal at all from the bailiff and there's very few other anglers around to worry about. There's plenty of perch, chub and pike in the system and I should go more often to be honest.
