Well I have taken the plunge and decided to try some u/l fishing. I was watching a lad at Frisby Lakes having a great time catching perch on this lightweight gear it looked real fun. After having had some success with flies for pike earlier in the year I thought perhaps this was something that the nooks and crannies of Frisby would be perfect for from the kayak. Just look at the place, it screams out PERCH PIKE !!!! So today I went to the house of an EBay vendor I contacted him and agreed to do a deal outside of EBay so I could handle the stuff first. He imports genuine branded gear direct from a US dealer. Daiwa, Shimano, Rapala to name just a few. I had a look at his gear or at least a tiny amount of it. The great thing is a lot of the stuff just isn't stocked in UK shops regularly. So I went for: Daiwa Presso ps0704ulfs A 7ft 4pce travel rod in a corder case. Casts 1/32 to 1/8 oz. 2-8lbs line. Really nice feeling rod. Daiwa Aird 2000 reel. And a few lovely micro and mini Rapala lures. They really are perfection in miniature. This guys gear is well worth having a look at if you are considering importing some gear. He say if he does not have it then contact him and he will have a chat with his dealer in the US and sort out a price. stores.ebay.co.uk/ALL-THINGS-FLY-Fly-Fishing?_trksid=p2047675.l2563Right off to Frisby Lakes in the morning to work around some of those weed beds. He even has quite a few Heddon lures for you Lure Fanatics with deeper pockets than me. Terry

With 76 pages to search through Terry, do you have the link to your rod/reel and a few mini lures pretty please. I found the presso 0702 but not the 0704 rod. I really fancy a crack at this as I think it could be spot on for the River Ancolme where there are many many perch and some rather nice pike.

Search on Presso and you will see the rod
Search Micro for the lures
The great thing is that with the kayak you don't have to cast from the bank OVER the weeds you can cast ALONG the edge.
I have always enjoyed fishing 'light' so that you can get the maximum fun out of any fish.

I found the 0702 rod but not the 0704 rod which is higher line strain.

0704 means 7ft 4 pce and 702 7ft 2 pce.
UL denotes ultra light.

Thanks Terry, a two piece would be fine
Thanks Daz, there are some cracking little fellas in that selection.
I wonder if some of my weighted flies would cast from such a rod because I know they work, Sam caught some really nice fish in Sweden using them so that may be an interesting way to go.
Ohhhh, I am sooooooooo close to placing an order, will I won't I !!!!!!!!!

I use the Spro Passion ultralight rod Phil, same one used in Sweden www.harrissportsmail.com/ReviewsSubmit.aspx?ModelID=16917Excellent rod, HIGHLY recommended. Any 750 or 1000 sized reel will do loaded with 10-13lb braid (I use 13lb). I used that outfit with your casting flies though if I wanted an outfit just for that job I'd go with a 5-20g 8ft rod, would cast even better. Nice setup Terry though you need some dinky jigheads and curltails, do 98% of my ultralight fishing with jigheads.

The rods look fine Phil, Savage Gear is a quality brand so you cannot go far wrong.
I think Daz has one of that brand of reel he should be able to tell you how well it has performed.

Well Sam, I have been on Harris site so many times but it will not give me SPRO rods to buy so I guess they don't sell them anymore and can't find anyone else that does either. I saw a review by Eric Weight regarding the Spro Passion with rave comments, really like that as it has a little more umph than some of the other rods, just don't seem to be able to find one to buy. Any ideas anyone Phil

Not sure Phil, had a look myself and odd that no one in the UK sells them. I used to sell them and was the first to push them in the UK, solds lots of them, cracking little rod. Real shame no one seems to stock them, wonder if they stopped making them.

SPRO is now part of Gamakatsu group and they are imported into the UK but the range has merged with some of the Gamakatsu rods so you don't know what is what. The passion doesn't exist any more so I think I am going to forget that one.
Time to go and have a look in the tackle shop, Savage / Diawa / Fox. I get really hacked off when the train of thought becomes mixed up always an issue when you are slowly feeling your way around a new aspect which this is for me.

As you know Daz, I am a bit of a novice when it comes to lure selection and with you being the lure guru, can you point out a few of these little fellas to go with my new rod ( ordered but not in my hands as yet ). I will be using my weighted fly/lures in the main but it would be good to have a few of this type of lure in the box as well. Phil

Those are inspired by my favourite lure, the old Fox Micro Mouse. Killer action for chub, perch and jacks cast tight to the margins and cranked down fast befor slowing down on the retrieve.

If you send Mark a pm Phil he should be able to sort you out. They are some blanks another lure builder made but didn't want to finish so he sent them to Mark.

Just contacted Mark, all sold out at the moment and hoping to get some more so I have requested being advised when next in stock. Really like the look of them. Think they will be spot on for the River Ancolme reed beds that run for miles along it's banks AND VERY VERY FEW BANK ANGLERS because there is no access.
