LURES
Not even going to attempt a review of lures. I apologise to any new comer to freshwater lure angling but there are literally thousands available.
It’s all about confidence in your own ability to choose the right LUREStype and colour of lure for the venue and conditions that you are fishing.
Here is a sneaky peak into a Pike anglers lure bucket fishing on Esthwaite Water.
Another picture of a Pike complete with lure that tempted it.
RULES
I will quickly run through the rules, commenting on any that I feel are important. I know rules suck but they are a necessary evil for tournaments
1. Only ARTIFICIAL LURES and FLIES allowed.
This means any (plastic or fly tied) artificial baits are allowed, except plastic sweetcorn or maggots! Artificial finesse worms are permitted. Bite indicators are also permitted to present artificial lure/bait.
2. NO TROLLING ALLOWED, fishing at anchor or on the drift only.
3. Each angler is only allowed to have a MAXIMUM OF THREE RODS in a boat / kayak. AN ANGLER IS ONLY ALLOWED TO FISH WITH ONE ROD AT ANY TIME, any angler caught fishing with two rods will be disqualified!
4. A maximum of two hooks allowed on fishing rigs, trebles count as one hook.
5. Any lure over three inch’s in length must be attached to main line via a wire trace, anglers discretion and experience is expected with lures under three inch - FISH WELFARE IS PARAMOUNT!
6. All boats / kayaks must have an unhooking mat and appropriate unhooking equipment (Long nose forceps and pliers).
This is a fishery rule, no unhooking mat = NO PIKE FISHING!
7. All kayak anglers should make themselves available to fellow competitors IF they require help unhooking, measuring and photographing a fish they have caught. Any substantiated claims of poor sportsmanship will incur a minus six inch penalty on accused competitor's catch returns. FISH WELFARE IS PARAMOUNT!
8. All fish have to be photographed on the official measuring tape on board either boat or kayak to qualify in the competition.
9. Fish are measured from tip of nose to the end tail fin, fish tail fin maybe pushed together to obtain maximum fish length. Any photograph not clearly showing the fish’s nose and end of tail will not be accepted by the organiser.
10. Competitors may catch more than one of each species with the longest fish counting as submitted fish.
11. All competitors must sign in at Esthwaite fishing lodge before 9am to register for the event. A pre Challenge talk will commence at 9am prompt whereby anglers will be given an official fish measure and catch return form.
12. All competitors must sign back in between 4:45pm and 5pm at the notified launch or be disqualified - no exceptions!
This rule is non negotiable, it enables me to ensure that every angler is safely off the water.
13. All competitors must complete a catch return form and hand them in at the fishing lodge before 6pm or be disqualified – no exceptions!
Each competitor will be given a simple catch return to complete by viewing their own fish photos after the competition and submitting the fish lengths on your return. All prize winning catch returns will require photographic evidence to be submitted to the organiser and fishery management team before the final results are announced.
14. All competitors must make themselves available to present photographs to the organiser between 6pm and 6:30pm or be disqualified – no exceptions!
15. All competitors must use a digital camera with an image display feature and ensure that they have the appropriate USB leads for image upload onto a PC.
16. All kayak anglers must have a warning whistle on their person whilst afloat. It can be used to attract other kayak anglers attention for assistance with unhooking / photographing a fish IF required or safety assistance - either way it’s going to get help to you.
I for example will be blowing my safety whistle should I be fortunate enough to catch a Pike. Not because I incapable of unhooking a Pike myself, I want a good quality photograph of the fish against the official measure and one with me holding the fish. Two pairs of hands make the job a lot easier and kinder on the fish!
17. NO ANGLER CAN WIN MORE THAN ONE PRIZE! Should an angler be eligible for more than one prize, they may select which one they would like and the next best angler in the category not selected is awarded a prize by default.
17a. An angler may collect more than one prize if he or she is the only angler eligible within that specific prize category. For example, he or she is the only angler to catch a fish on a fly lure and has won another prize category.
18. In the event of an equal "Grand Slam" combined fish length, the result shall be decided by the longest Perch, if that is the same then longest Trout and finally longest Pike.
19. The Esthwaite fishery management team will be JUDGE & JURY with regards to FISH LENGTHS RECORDED for the challenge!
Please don’t take advantage of these few rules; it will be awfully embarrassing when you are found out!
I hope to create a tournament that lure anglers of all abilities can enjoy, from the most fiercely competitive to the laid back lure chucker.
Prizes have been structured so that they are attainable for all average skilled lure anglers.
The event ethos is “ENJOY YOUR TOURNAMENT” ;D catch some cracking fish on a stunning venue amongst like minded anglers.
I’ve set the stage, now it is over to you guys the competitors to create a good atmosphere that generates a feel good factor about being apart of the “Grand Slam Challenge” Lure Angling Tournament.
Kayak anglers please park your car in the car park just past the turning for the fishery lodge. The car park is the official launch point for the competition.
Boat anglers may park in any car park, although it might be worth noting that car parking around the fishery lodge is limited. The fisheries boat jetty is the official launch point for the competition.
