Looks a bit drab this time of year but nice in summer, use to pull chub out from there some years ago, it's the next stretch of river up from hazleford .
the edge or the water not to deep for getting in to yak, think gunthorpe will be my first trip out in spring.

Who controls that bank Dusty? I know Notts AA have the opposite bank. Easy to get to, no muddy lanes to go down. Cracking boozer, just a bitch to get back onto the main road when it's busy. Terry

Not sure who controls the fishing , going back down next weekend, will see if I can find out.
Road might be problem when turning onto the main road next to the bridge, you would be better going right at the unicorn pub and through the village and come out near the caravan sales ( David fuller) then turn left back to A46 or right back to burton joice , nottingham. Dusty

Wasn't there an exclusive Barbel Club that leased loads of weir fields a while ago? They have the lock side island up at Stokes weir.

The bit I am thinking of is the small sand bar directly at the foot of the lock wall below the weir. Tiny bit but I was told it actually had fishing rights on it.

Know we're you mean Terry, Not sure who runs that part of the river,
use to fish at burton joice on the long straight part, peg next to bit were the water comes in to the river from the water treatment plant,
use to stick float in the foam lots of Good Perch and chub, or use to be! never seen many people fishing the other side of river though!

I know where you mean I have fished many a match on the BJ stretch and the outfall used to be one of the hot swims.
I used to fish the Ratcliffe side of the weir 30 odd year ago and had some massive bags of chub on feeder and a gallon of bronze maggots.
I returned about 3 years ago and had 7 barbel to 8 pounds and only one chub mind you it was a 6 pounder. They seem to have been pushed out by the barbel.
I have looked at the Ashfield site as the name rang a bell. Yup. The have the Lock island on their £75 ticket, there is a waiting list, they also have the fantastic Thrumpton stretch with a great chub history but now barbel, Fiskerton and a stretch of the river at Gunthorpe not sure exactly where.

Ashfield angling club , the ashfields thats the part of notts I'm from.
Now then, when you cross gunthorpe bridge coming in from A46 side, directly left on the little dirt track that runs at the side of river, heading up stream, have you seen them large lakes to your right, who's got the fishing wrights to them, they would be nice to fish , for what I can remember the lake had a lot of over hanging trees.
Im not sure if it's a popular place that gets fished much now but when I lure fished it once some 20 years ago I didn't see anyone.
if your not sure we're I mean Google earth it's between the Trent and lowdham caravans. thanks for the info on home pierpoint.

Just had a look at the ashfield angling gunthorpe info,
when they say rowing type boats do you think yaks fall into that category?, looking at the size of the lake I would imagine that the carp men would find the walk to the far side to much? For some anyway.
would make a good venue do you think and at £75 per year and all the other sites they run that looks good value for money, looks like they run a tight ship with the rules but hay that's a good thing, some 20+years ago the A1pits was run like that, had some good pike out them in the somer months.

Also at hoveringham one of the used gravel pits has been turned into a sailing and wind surfing club been there some years now but no yaks , shame it to is a large water, bet there be some big fish to.
take a look at there web site, looks a nice set up that they run.

Not sure Phil but I think the club is Scunthorpe Pisces. Terry You are right Terry don't think they have anything at Hoveringham though, I am a member can't recall seeing it on there book or website. Notts anglers do have a pit near Swinderby they have the fishing rights to you had any conversation with them about that Terry?

Interesting that, since they can't get to fish a large majority of the pit and there is already a canoe club on there.

Yes Graham that was the argument I put forward but after many face to face meetings he would only give the Farndon stretch. Terry

I to find it very strange that fishing clubs that run venues that can only be part fished from serton arears turn down the chance to make more money for there club by useing other methods!

It's because we are a new sport and many clubs identify us with youth clubs coming onto their water and messing about in their swims. I will take time but people are getting the idea that we are different, slowly Terry
