fly fishing for perch

any one had any major success with the fly rod for perch ? fly fishing for them as been terrible for me ..ive used tadpoles hummungus and clouser minnows and only had a few small ones ...its one method i want too use more ....any suggestions on flys would be greatfully received !!

Never targeted perch on the fly. Funnily enough on my first attempt at fishing for trout on the fly a few years ago I caught a couple of good perch before I caught a trout. Not caught any perch since. Must have been doing something wrong or right in the case of the perch?

Those small jig flies (wee beasties as he calls them) I showed you that Pete Kennett ties up could be a good option. He has caught good perch on them and they can be tied weighted with the dumbbells or without.

yes lazyboy1912 ..think i may go for some flashy bright in your face colours ..got lots of coloured bucktail upstairs ..fly tying vice may need to come out before summer ..

Hi Stu

I enjoy flyaking a great deal and usually target Pike.
I have caught some nice perch on smaller pike flies when after
jacks with smaller flies about 4 inches long , deer hair and marabou
perch patterns work well. Wire trace doesn't seem to put them off.

When I target perch I do well using #6 gear, fast sink line and
black booby type fly with a sqirrel hair thorax and green tail
White and red is also good. Fish this hard on the bottom.
For smaller fish in a different water natural nymph patterns tied
on a gold head do well fished on a floating or intermediate line.

In June/July I often have my lighter fly rod set up ready while
I am using my Pike fly gear, because sometimes good Perch suddenly
show chasing fry in the margins ( like hungry mackerel ) if you get
your fly in there amongst them quickly before they disappear you always
get a hook up and they are usually 1 lb plus fish, these small shoals
of better sized perch really hit the fly hard - they are fry feeding and
chase anything that moves but I favour a fly about 3 inches long with
plenty of silver and strip the fly quickly.
They completely disappear again though as quickly as they appeared !

Perch fly fishing for me is always consistently inconsistent
One day fantastic sport the next nothing !

I have caught loads of perch on the fly Stu although not from the kayak but a freshwater fishery in my village which has now closed it's doors sadly. I used a 6# or 7# rod with normal nymph patterns in green or tiny poppers in the summer months, Deerphil knows how much I love my poppers. I have to be very honest and say that many of them were in the 6 - 8 oz size although on the same gear I have had some really nice chub.

cheers philpot ive always been interested in fly fishing for perch but have not done well !!! think i need too look at lures !! fly fishing for coarse fish is a book i need too get !! going to try from kayak this summer in deeper water

has any one treid small soft baits for fly rodding ive got some small 1inch koyoptos i might try fitting to small hooks and use them with my fly rod !!!

Yes they will work fine Stu. Yorkshire Game Angling have for years been selling soft plastics for fly fishing usually with a little deer hair at the head to cause water disturbance. I have caught both trout and perch on these.
