I used to go to Windermere quite a lot Andy. I took my caravan and boat to a place called Hill of oakes which is situated on the banks of the Windermere and has it's own launch slipway. I have had perch, trout and pike of course, the perch and trout on the fly. It has the only char to be found in England as far as I know and the manager of the site is or was a very knowledgeable pike / char angler. It is a great place for an angler afloat and well worth a visit. You will only need to paddle 30yds and find fish but to be honest I have not been for a number of years, I doubt it has changed much except for a lack of high power speed boats though so should be ideal. Be aware you will need a permit for the kayak but not sure what the rules are now so check with the official Windermere site for the regs on kayaks. Here is the link to the camp site. www.hillofoaks.co.uk/

I am going to Hill of Oaks in 2 weeks Phil so I will be getting in touch to pick your brains.
I have just rang the lake district information service and the good news is that non motorised craft don't need registering for use on Windermere!

If you fancy North Lakes try Ullswater, I have always camped at Parkfoot Caravan and Camping at top end (has own launch site). Never failed to catch perch on opposite bank between Rampsgate Hotel heading North to 400 yards past an small, enclosed walled marina. Also caught plenty of perch and trout around the bay at Howtown (few parking spaces here by side of road with lake access) but keep an eye open for the ferry.
Had some decent catches of perch and pike from Derwentwater. You can camp by the shore at the Caravan and Camping site at Keswick Crow park Rd if not already booked up. I always pick up most fish on the weather side of the islands, keeping more to the left hand side of the lake heading down from Keswick. Derwentwater is shallower and has a more even depth profile than a lot of the other Lakes, and really shallow areas do get weeded up.
Bassenthwaite supposed to be excellent perch fishing, but have never fished it. Not sure how you go on with permits etc but I do know it is doable.
Good luck

As said Derwent Water is worth a go. We went last year, I was happy catching Jacks near the weed beds on ultra light gear, but some of the other guys had some decent perch out as well. I haven't fished Ullswater for a long time but I did used to get some very good perch from the bank back then. I would imagine drop shotting would be very productive on there. Coniston might be worth a shout too it does have the Char as we caught one some years back by design on traditional char rigs complete with long pole and bell, but your chances are fairly low of finding one, need to fish very deep. Has anybody had a char from a kayak?

If you are after specimen Perch then it's either bassenthwaite or derwentwater . Lots of two pound fish with a good chance of a big 3lb plus fish . Unlike most areas the lakes is a summer venue for perch , they dissapear into the depths in October . Permits for both lakes available at the tackle shop in Keswick . Take a look at Eric Hopes blog , he's the best guide up there . Ullswater is free and is primarily an early season wild brown trout water . Lots of fish but rarely any great size but hard fighters . Lot of perch but a pound fish is a good fish ! No pike apparently . Coniston is also free , not an easy water to fish , good pike , trout and perch . Locals get a lot of charr on the right tactics . My mate has had them in 150ft on swim feeder and maggot from the kayak
