OK so a group of us managed to get out on Rutland Water this week to try and find the Zander.
Reports from the Zander Masters the day before were promising but having seen the results now perhaps not as good as expected with only a handful getting double figures.
So after a night of torrential rain Myself, Daz Mark, Martin, Amos, Dizzy, Andy and Gary paid for our tickets, paid our launch fee, had a brief from the Head Ranger Andy Ainscough and we were ready to get on the water.
As per usual I was 20 minutes behind everyone else as I was still chatting with Andy.
Conditions looked promising.
I was looking forward to having my first fishing trip on my Hobie Pro Angler 14.
She was rigged and ready to go.
So this was my day, hopefully the lads will post their pics and comments.
First off I headed out for a known fish holding spot…The Pipe’. This is set in 80ft of water. I spent ages tripping around the north arm with no joy. It cannot jusr disappear ?? It was not until an hour later that I realized I had set my FF to 60ft depth! DOH!!!
Anyway lost and confused I headed over to The Tower, another known hot spot.
I set myself up to do slow drifts past the Tower and this is where the PA came in very useful. By pedaling I could reduce my drift dramatically in the gusty wind and keep a nice vertical line to the jig head and flutter the lure about 6” off bottom.
This produced four fish for me.
I then went back to the area of the Pipe and varied my speed of drift and captured another 3 zeds.
Overall I enjoyed the day and learned a lot. The lads also got amongst the fish and Amos caught some Zeds….or should I say Zzzzzzzzzzzz’s.
Then back to the slipway.
Until the next time.
And remember this is Gods County.
