Hi all, new to kayak fishing but an experienced angler. Looking for a new challenge so on a whim got myself a 12ft fishing kayak. Am looking to learn and join any group outings etc. I do have boat experience, as I have a 12ft American style Jon boat. Tight lines Andy

Hi Andy welcome mate. Rugby? Just down the road from me. I'm in Leicester. What kayak have you brought? You may have noticed that most of us focus on lure and drop shot fishing although often this is because a lot of the waters we have access to are more suited to that rather than general coarse fishing. Having said that I have fished for most species from mine. The kayak is a great platform to fish off. The increased access it gives you is ideal for exploring water that others cannot get to. The best way to learn about safety and tactics is to get out with some lads or come to an event. There is a great event coming up at Pitsford in August over two days that is well worth considering. There is also one at Esthwaite in the Lakes too. That's a good one as many of us go a couple of days early so we can get on to another lake or two to make the trip worthwhile. Don't worry about attending an event with experienced kayakers as at the end of the day we are just a bunch of anglers who happen to be on kayaks. We now have access to Rutland and Pitsford along with Rutland, all not too far from you and we can predator fish there. The big thing is trying to get clubs to give us access, perhaps you have contacts with clubs that let you take your boat on their water. Maybe they would offer the same access for kayaks? Keep your eyes open mate as the weather improves you will see trips being planned. Feel free to ask questions mate you will find the atmosphere here a little less 'confrontational' than some forums. We are here to help where we can and rest assured no question is a stupid question if it's something you need to know. Every new member brings something to the forum be it knowledge of locations, tactics etc. Terry

A warm welcome Andy. As Terry has said, any type of fishing can be done from a kayak although there are some fish I would not wish to wish to have sat on my lap but joking apart, you go with what interests you. The main thing is to establish where you can take the kayak near you and make that venue the one to learn about fishing from a kayak. Lure, bait or fly fishing are all easily done and only slight changes to procedure that really needs alteration.
Make yourself at home and ask whatever questions you like and I'm sure someone will help.
Good luck and let us see a photo of your kayak because someone may be able to offer an idea or two regarding the fitting out of that particular kayak.
Phil

Cheers all. I think it's on old Galaxy cruz. It's different from the current model as the hand grips are moulded on the inside edge of the cockpit, not grip handles like on the new ones. I have washed it all down and added some new decals. I can not seem to be able to Load pictures onto here from my mobile, do I need to do this via a pc? Might try some inshore bits as we'll on it just pollock, mackerel and bass etc. Anything for a bit of fun! I have the life jackets, drogues, anchors and safety equipment from my other boat so I think it should all be dual use.

Andy, If it has rod tubes fitted be sure to check that they are water tight. There was a problem with early Cruz's. You can either do this by putting some water inside the hull and turning it upside down or pu a rod butt in the tube and flex it to see if the edges of the rod tube lift. If there is any leakage or movement I would suggest removing them and re-riveting them with fresh sealant. Being out on the water is the wrong time to find a leak. Also be aware that the Cruz is at it's best on rivers and lakes and sheltered bays. Most people recommend 12/13ft or more for the salty stuff. It's not the sea state when you launch that is the problem it's the sea state a couple of hours later that matters. I would also suggest having a look on you tube for 'self rescues'. Then find some sheltered water and practice falling off and re-mounting. If you practice then a capsize is less of a shock when it happens for real. It can be tough going the first few times you try it. Terry

If you do mean "life jacket" I hope that its manual, but over the years experience has gone to PFD's as they do not inflate unwanted, if used stay as they are ,try getting on a yak with an inflated LJ !have pockets , and a PFD will keep you warm too, good luck ,Chris
