Hi, I've just bought my first kayak and am looking forward to go out for a paddle on it. I've got very limited kayaking experience and never fished from one so hoping to get some advice and guidance from more experienced paddlers. If you're in or around Kent and are going out for a paddle let me know, I might just join you Hoping to see you guys on the watter soon. Romas

Hi and welcome Romas, What kayak have you brought and what fishing are you planning to do from it. One of our keen members AndyK lives down your way and can hopefully offer some advice on the area. Terry

Cheers Terry, I've got a Prowler Ultra 4.1, just trying to get all the rest of my kit sorted now. Got a pfd delivered yesterday and a long john wetsuit with neoprene boots to start with. Was going to wear that with a water proof top and pants to stop the wind chill. Want to get couple of paddle leashes, a safety knife, and a trolly to start off with, then I think I should be ready to try it out on the water. As for fishing, I love just any kind mostly do lure fishing though, so that would be the one I'd start with I suppose, but once I get some skills might try and get out to the sea as well.

You are doing things right Romas. The first thing I would advise is to get out on a safe canal or lake and practice self rescues. There are loads of videos on YouTube. Once you have done it a few times capsizing will hold no fears and your confidence will soar. Try and make it to a meet. You will get to chat to loads of guys and learn far more than from the internet. It's a shame you are so far south as there is a big meet coming in August at Pitsford Reservoir and one at Esthwaite in the Lake District in June. They are both Grand Slam events. Catch, measure and photograph your largest perch, pike and trout. Great prizes but even better social side with the chance to see the way everyone else rigs their kayaks. The Ultra 4.1 will stand you in good stead mate. A great site for info is dizzybigfish.co.ukHave a look at Ian's Guide To Kayak Fishing. Terry

Thanks Terry, I think I've watched most of them on youtube I've been planning on getting a kayak for couple of years now, so I had some time to look things up I'll see if I can get a BCU course done some time soon, do you think it's worth doing? Maybe there's a better alternative? I might go out on grand union canal near Rickmansworth for first try, my brother lives nearby so he can spot me from the bank. I'd really like to come to a meet some time, but usually it's so far up north:) pitsford is doable though, 130 miles or so, but difficult to plan so far ahead because of work...

A warm welcome aboard Romas, the 4.1 is a well rated kayak and I am sure you will be fine with it.

Andy,
Are you coming to any of the other big meets, Esthwaite and Pitsford?

Probably not but I hadn't really thought about it much. I'll see what the calendar, my wallet and the life boss are saying

Can you fish Grafham water all year round from kayak? I'd love to come, but seems like a bit too high profile competition for a total noob to take place in

At the moment Grafham are refusing full kayak access. This will be the first time ever. We are hoping that if we can show we are safe on the water that the attitude may change in some way for the future. Don't be worried about being new to the sport. The guys are very friendly and always keen to guide and encourage new people. Terry

I've entered it just for the taking part, thought it would be a laugh. Don't worry about being a noob, I've only been kayaking for a couple years and still think of myself as a novice. Plenty of time to get some practice in!

Is there a limit on how many kayakers can register? Could not find the info... when do they close the registration?

Did you get a confirmation email from them pretty quick or did it take some time? I was doing it over my phone and it was a bit funny, I've got an email from paypal, but haven't got anything from WPC yet.
