Since having my kayak I barely bank fish but when I did, live bait was my main choice of bait for pike. I have live baited from the kayak a few times but used a bucket with the bottom cut out and a bit of netting instead with a hole in the lid for grabbing. Had this strapped on and slung over the side but it used to tip over when I paddled and the fish escaped! Got a bucket and air pump I'm going to secure into the back of the yak and use. Just wondered what others use or if anyone has used the containers which drag along behind you? Seen a couple different designs but they don't look very big...

Don't you find it gets snagged on underwater branches and things? Could make something like that with my old keepnet

Just be discrete however you do it. I think I am right in saying that if you retain fish you should keep them in a net which cpmplies fully with EA regulations on keep nets which is impossible on a mobile kayak. I may be wrong and there may be exemptions for livebait retention but unless you are sure be discrete. Terry

Bought this on eBay for £2 something! Can't go wrong lol www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282070846545 I didn't know that about keeping live baits Terry. Luckily the stretches of river I tend to go are nice and quiet...

If you plan to keep it in the water then nets and buckets sound like a lot of excess drag to me. Search kayak live bait tubes, there's loads of how to's and its pretty much how the rest of the kayak world do dragable live bait storage.

The net won't be delivered in time for my trip Saturday so I'm strapping my bucket in behind me. I've seen the torpedo type ones but you must be restricted on how deep bodied the live bait are, plus probably get more in a net or bucket

I have to admit that a while back I just put scupper bungs in and flooded the foot well of the kayak.

I reckon you'd get more roach in a 2ft section of soil than a decent sized bucket as it offers more usable area to the fish. I've found live baits don't like to stack on top of each other and struggle for the bottom of the bucket. A length of pipe would offer them more 'bottom space'. Even though there going to end up on a set of trebles I like to make sure there happy until that point.

I hadn't of using a pipe and the poo tube would be a good diameter. Just at my folks sorting my kayak now so I'll have a look in the garage for some tubing and see what I can rustle up. Hopefully I'm rewarded after all this with a big ol' girl on my lap! Weather forecast isn't great for Saturday though

I've not snagged mine at all as it only sits in the water as deep as the drawstring, also if I'm moving far I take it out of the water and sit it in a bucket. Have you considered fitting a livebait well at all under an existing hatch or even fitting an hatch in a reachable place, you can either pump water through the well of fit an air pump.

I had thought if one could be fitted but wasn't sure it was a "thing" or not. I've got an old Prowler with a hatch between my legs I never use. How does one go about opening up the compartment and making it into a live well? Definitely going to look into this.
