I am picking up my new kayak on Friday and I want to get a new sonar to stick on it. My new boat is a Old Town predator and the through scupper is recessed for a Hummingbird transducer. What is your opinion on Hummingbird FF's? Do you have any recommendations for me? Thanks lads.

It is set for a Hummingbird because Ocean own both Old Town and Hummingbird. I had a Hummingbird combo but by far preferred the Garmin I had on a previous kayak and if I were to buy another now, it would be Garmin without doubt. If however you want one of the all singing all dancing FFs then there are other clever units that I have no real knowledge on but if you are wanting a good FF without braking the bank then look no further than Garmin and they have a wealth of experience over many many years.
The mounting system is also far superior to Hummingbird which have a habit of snapping, then you have to send off to Italy to get another bracket.

Thanks Phil, I love my toys. I would like to get something with side imaging, it looks like a great (I know... unnecessary) toy to play with. I've heard some really good things about the Garmin. My biggest concern is damaging the transducer, I don't know if the Garmin transducer will fit in the recess. I think for side imaging to work it has to be in the water? I'll see if I can find some dims for the Garmin.

To be honest the vast majority of kayak anglers mount the transducer inside the hull as it is only single skin, performance is not an issue. People use silicone or Sikaflex to mount the transducer in place and the only thing to be careful of, not to create or trap air bubbles in the solution or you will get poor signal but don't worry, it is an easy job to do.

Would the side imaging work through the hull?

I have never owned a side imaging so cannot comment, you need to get better advice than I can offer there.

I believe all side imaging transducers have to have a clear unobstructed view. i.e outside the hull .

I never owned a fish finder but just thinking of getting one but only for fresh water,is all this side scan marlaky worth all the extra dosh and hassle of fitting huge transducers etc? As A bottom mid range priced ff will show the features and depths? Why would we want to see the features in more detail? does side scan show more area of the bottom. Be nice if someone can explain the advantages of side scan down scan and how it will help put more fish in the boat,If it's money well spent on side scan then I will get one and get rid of the plumb rod and plastic marker milk cartons lol.

I have just fitted a sidescan transducer to my Hobie Outback. Never used it before and first time will be at Swanage this weekend. There is a reef there and I am looking forward to trying sidescan over it. I will post my results. I should add that I am fortunate enough not to have laid out a load of cash on the gear but I will tell more shortly. Terry

I have just bought my first FF with side scan, I can't wait to check it out. I can't see how it can not be beneficial, the amount of information you get from it is incredible. Up to 200ft either side of you boat, it would drastically reduce the time I spend finding features to fish. There is many videos like this: youtu.be/-m1Jui2LcgI

I bought a Humminbird Helix 5 si. It's got a relativity tiny transducer, I estimate about 5 inches long. My boat has a transducer scupper designed for the Humminbird transducer, it'll go in there.

Hi guys, For what it's worth I have been using a Hummingbird Piranhamax 230e for some years now. Whilst its main use is to be used in conjunction with a rod and line it came with a transducer on a suction cup mount. I have used this setup on my sit in dagger kayak for and it works great.
