Found a couple decent swan feathers whilst wondering the bank the other day and would like to have a go making some quill floats. Been reading how do it but unsure on which paints and varnish would be suitable. Also how do I tie off whipping? Just stick it down using a little superglue and varnish on top?

I have just been given some old tackle to sell and there are some quill floats if you are interested. When we were kids we used to collect seagull feathers and made shed loads of floats. The whipping is easy enough and nowadays you can buy UV cured high build varnish to make a cracking job.

Cheers Phil. Pop a photo up and I'll have a look. I started off preparing the quills but I think they're gonna be too big and chunky to use as nice trotting floats. The guy in the vid gbthejoiner but up used goose feathers. Have to keep my eyes open for some.

Quills from just about any bird will do, it depends upon the amount of buoyancy you are after. Years ago crow quills were used with a cork shoulder here's a link to making them www.anglersmail.co.uk/fishing-tips/tackle-fishing-tips/how-to-make-a-fishing-float-crowquill-avon-23825I'm sure youtube will hold loads of information also. Humbrol used to be the paint to use, but it was just about the only stuff you could get in small quantities. I remember the fluorescent orange becoming unavailable for some strange reason, it was my favourite colour.
