Right I have just bought a new lure rod and am putting new line on the reel so as I dont do much fresh water lure fishing, what is the general rule of thumb for line when pike is the target.
10lb fluo or heavier or something completely different.

I tend to use 15-20lb line, this tends to be about the norm.

I have 15lb braid. Fluro is too expensive as main line Phil. Perhaps as a shock leeder at the end of braid but not 100m of it.

for lure fishing i tend to use 20lb braid for 3" plus lures and 10 braid for smaller lures. i always use a floro leader of around 6ft when lure fishing with a trace and snap link. if bait fishing i'd prob use the 20lb braid with a wire trace.

Phil I use 30 or 35lb braid for my lure fishing fresh or sea with a 19lb fluro leader (seaguar) if i do any float fishing for pike I use the same line, For livebaits I only use a single hook something like a 4/0 weedless to a trace of fox carbo wire in 30lb

Interesting to see that some of you guys use flourocarbon leaders with your braid not come across that one before there has been a few discussion about using flourocarbon for traces. I have gone down the braid route in the past with a wire trace of various breaking strains depending on the lure size. Anyone using mono as there seems to be a move back to using that for certain situations? Graham

Graham The reason I asked the question in the first place was that my friends who fish the Lincolnshire drains from the bank use mono and fluorocarbon lines for dead baits, but as none of them lure fish, I had no point of reference. I used fluorocarbon from the bank myself for dead baits, just was not sure about lures. Phil

The sensitivity of braid wins every time for me.

For pike fishing with lures strong braid and a wire trace every time in my opinion, seen people fishing with the bite proof sea gaur get bitten off by even the smallest of jacks, this was when using 80lb sea gaur so not even the light stuff, do yourself and the pike a favour use a wire trace. I tend to use very heavy braid 100lb plus and the same for my trace (titanium wire) I don't bother with a fluorocarbon shock leader and the pike do not mind, this is when fishing with big jerk baits and swimbaits, for smaller lures I drop down to 30-50lb braid again with a similar weighted titanium trace. Again no need for a fluorocarbon leader. Cheers mark

I notice that a lot of ' pike anglers' are replacing their wire traces with 100lb plus flouro and reporting increased catches . not for me , like that exra security of a wire trace. ps Anyone thinking of giving Llangorse a try its fishing its socks off.
