'Crafty Carp'
The Carp, once stocked as a food fish, grows large, fights hard and can tax the ingenuity of even the best anglers.
Carp characteristics:
The name carp covers a variety of species including common, crucian and grass. The carp most frequently found throughout Britain is common. But just top make things more confusing, there are three cultivated varieties of common carp - leather, mirror and 'common' in addition to yet another type, the wild type.
In terms of looks the Common Carp have small, evenly distributed scales, the mirror carp have large shiny scales, the leather carp are smooth.
Where to find Carp:
Carp prefer still waters such as lakes, gravel pits and reservoirs. They can also, however, be found in slow moving rivers and canals.
Feeding Habits:
Carp are mostly found in lakes and they feed mainly during the summer months, when they will take food from the surface. Earlier in the season, they browse in the soft-weed beds, feeding among the new growth. As carp have a marked preference for water with weed, when they are found in rivers, it is usually somewhere having both weed ad slightly muddy bottom from which they can take water snails, worms and larvae.
Carp Baits:
Worm, bread and maggots are the three main carp baits but they will also take potato, banana, green beans, peas, cheese, slugs and freshwater mussels.
Large lob worm make excellent carp baits used singly or in a bunch. Small redworms should be bunched so that they form a wriggling ball of food. As with bream, carp seem to find these almost irresistible again possibly because the ball resembles a large mass of wriggling blood worms. Bread can be used in a variety of ways. A paste made of stale bread and water makes an excellent bait. A matchbox sized crust bait can be deadly. This is a surface bait which should be used close to the bank or around weed beds.
Specialist carp anglers have considerable success catching very large Carp with particle baits such as sweetcorn, cooked beans and boilies. Many carp anglers understandably choose to keep secret the ingredients they use to put together their boilies. A basic boilie is made by binding paste ingredients with raw egg, rolling the mixture into marble sized balls, then boiling in water for a few minutes to form a touch skin.
Carp respond well to groundbait, which should mainly consist of the hookbait.
