Leading on from my last post it would appear that braid has become popular is this more for distance work? Any advice on brands breaking strains etc would be much appreciated. Graham

I have started using braid, Fladen Maximus 30lb and I hate the stuff, give me mono any time.Wind knots, about 4 on this spool so far and the braid is flat so it twists like hell.
Perhaps it is the braid which is crap, I don't know, it would be interesting to find out what others use and do they have these issues.

I only lure fish and only ever use braid. You can use heavier breaking strains because of the extremely low diameter which is essential when you want to throw heavy lures when using multipliers.
I have hardly ever suffered with wind knots and find that if I ever get an over run with multipliers it is very easy to pick out the tangles.
The other benefit is that you do feel everything when using braid.
I am not too sure what is best to use when dead/live baiting. I wouldn't have a problem using either for this method.
I have used various different braids and have my favourites depending on the reel I am using and whether I am fishing light or heavy.

fladen braid is not good Phil, power pro or TFG Grunt is my choice from now on, plus dont fill the spool to the top like with mono.

Been having a look on the pikers pit they seem to favour braid but they seem to go a bit overboard 65lb power pro seems to be the favourite.

Used 65lb power pro for the last 5 winters and never had any issues with it, the reason for using such strong braid is that if you snag up your trace in the water around sunken branches etc you have enough power in the your main line and trace to straighten the treble and retrieve your full trace back, a baited trace left in the water means dead Pike. Personally love braid for the sensitivity it gives playing the fish, you feel every lunge and pull, because of its none stretch it also offers the opportunity to set the hooks much better when striking into a fish. The only downside to braid is over rocky bottoms, any slight nick and it will snap like cotton, when fishing a venue like this I will revert back to mono which has a higher abrasion tolerance. All the best John

Ok, power Pro 65lb it is. I do have an ABU Revo Toro 61HS reel but not sure how light a lure I can use with this, maybe stick with the Shimano f/s and braid and try that. I bet Power Pro is an arm and leg chaps isn't it.

I personally use 18lb mono for my deadbaiting but braid all the way for lure fishing. 30lb for my light lure work up to 80lb for big lures/swimbaits.

I bet Power Pro is an arm and leg chaps isn't it. Phil The Fladen line is cheap but is very basic and prone to line twist. This guy www.fishingtackle-online.co.uk/ is good for powerpro, its very reliable and lasts for years so you will get your money back over time. I think the Torro will be a bit heavy for lures off the kayak, its a great reel but better suited to jerkbaits and heavy lure fishing. How about trying a centrepin, trotting live and deadbaits... good fun and very touchy feely... I may be able to set you up as I've aquired 3 Greys 11' x 2.25 tc platignum rods. Phil

Yellow gives improved visibility around snags and trees etc, it does not put the fish off at all. Phil

Another vote for power pro, and have been using berkley nanofil for lure fishing and finding it ideal.

Iu sed to use 50 and 60lb powerpro, great stuff. i don't like the Fladen Maxximus 30lb braid, have never liked flat braids (of any brand and to be fair I had more problem with a very good flat braid on a mate's baitcasters, can't recall what it was), but the 40lb maxximus is good. The 90lb is excellent - I use it for abrasion resistance when fishing for hounds and ray on the bottom above the hook length, a couple of yards as the former sometimes roll in the line and the later turn and get tail wrapped.
