It is that time and I can't decide what I want for Christmas so I am looking at two reels, can anybody comment please. The two in question are the Trabucco Air Blade and the Okuma Trio S Hi-Speed. I know both seem to have a good name and I have had an Okuma Epix-Pro for some years with no issues at all but the Trabucco also looks to be a serious bit of kit. I want the reel for lure work and some bait fishing for pike/perch so a 40 or 50 size is what I was thinking. www.gerrysfishing.com/trabucco-air-blade-4000.irwww.gerrysfishing.com/okuma-trio-s-hi-speed-reels.ir

Personally I would go for the okuma for no other reason than I know that a few of the guys that lure fish regularly use them and I have not heard a bad word said against them. Graham

Personally I would go with the Okuma. Their build quality is superb.

Well I have just phoned Gerry's tackle who I have dealt with for years, all my Zziplex rods were hand built there so I have some confidence in them. They said the Trabucco is a gem of a reel, really nice quality but when I asked for availablity of a spare spool, that is where it stopped dead. They have had a number of people having bought the reel wanted a spare spool and whilst orders have been placed, they have had no responce whatsoever which put me right off so it looks like an Okuma for me which comes with a spare spool.

Hi Phl
Is it a front drag reel you are after?
I only ever used front drag fixed spool reels for my light/medium lure work. I always tended to go for good quality match reels with no problems.
In the summer though I was in the market for a fixed spool reel to use for medium lure work. For a change I opted for the Shimano Exage 4000RC.
It has been fantastic. What I really like is the fighting drag. If your drag is slightly too tight you can quickly adjust it for that sudden surge. I have since got the 3000 for some lighter lure work.
If you want you could even slacken the fighting drag right off and it is near enough a bait runner.
Just thought I would give you another option.

Thanks for that Ian. I am a Shimano lover and have them for my carp fishing with 10000 and 8010 reels but I found on a couple of the smaler reels, the line lay was not good at all. Is the Exage decent line lay. Just had a look at the 4000RC with rear drag and at £59.99, rather like that www.gerrysfishing.com/shimano-exage-4000-rc.irPhil

So far I have had no problem with the line lay. The shallow spools are perfect for braid. I have only used them a handful of times but the fighting drag has come in handy a few times. I was a front drag only lure angler but for the price these reels are a good option.

Don't know them and can't comment but as I'm about to email and get a couple of new reels...
Most of my lure work, for pike, perch and bass, is done on baitcasters which also get used for a bit of pike bait fishing. Fladen Maxximus LP Magnet 6bb reels. Been using baitcasters for years, previously shimanos though these are superior. Anyway...this year I got a Vantage FX 7bb which is absolutely stunning. Took bass to 5lb on it in tide and could have taken way bigger. there's quite a similarity to my mate's more expensive shimano...probably the same factory to be honest. Anyway, these are now fully available, you can have a look at the weekend. I have a DX too, this took chub to 5lb on 4lb line. Anyhow, I'm about to order two brand new reels from the maxximus range, one with 8 bearings and one with 12. The KM, with 8 bearings, has a spare spool. will hopefully know if the others have spare spools available later on.
Usual rider, am sponsored by Fladen (I blog about my fishing on their site). The two f/s reels, one in 20 and one in 30 size that I've been using have been salt-soaked quite a bit and though freshwater reels have been fine with rinsing, soaking and lubricating and have taken good fish. These two new ones, again 30 size, are going to get tested cod fishing (up to 3 knots, 1/2lb lead, cod) for the sake of it because I'm sure they can take it. Might be worth a look if you can find somewhere that stocks them?
Oh, why going for big ones terry? I took yellowfin tuna to 20lb or so on 30 sized f/s reels, can't see you'd need as much grunt for pike here as that, even in weed?

The KM and 11+1 reels look very good and what good prices. I note that none of them say oscillating spool for line lay quality so is the line lay okay Mark.

Never had a reel that small before Daz, are they up to pike fishing Phil you wouldnt want to be chucking large deadbaits or BIG lures but they will handle most of what we tend to catch from the kayak, as you know shimano make some of the best gear in the world imo

Guess we both forgot on Saturday Mark. Good to see you again mate and am I glad I got back home early because the wind was picking up all the way home, by 7.30pm I would not have tried to take the Cuda off the car on my own, the wind was evil.
I popped into Southwold to get a couple of things and boy the sea was really rough with waves around 3-4' crashing in, great to watch and even the surfers were having trouble.
The wind is just not easing at all, hope to have a pike session during the holiday if it dies down.

Well, I have sorted it.
Shimano Exage 3000MRC high speed with two alloy spools both having the high angle lip for the most efficient casting and the fighting drag. A little bartering and £26 off, £49.99 and a good discount on some braid. A very nice little reel, I am rather pleased.
It will be tried out this Christmas for sure.

surfers are poofs. They pose instead of catch waves. And get in my way. Mind you. I'm jealous, woud love to be able to board surf. reels arrived xmas eve, initial thoughts: oh my! proof is in the pudding. small reels so 8ox uptide on one and 12ox bell lead on the other next time I'm on a boat wheat to one side, chaff to the other...

There is a lot of very underrated gear from Fladen, it is a pity that only the crap is sold in bargin basement shops, I do not know of one tackle shop that sells the good stuff---------what a pity.
I know you would not think so to look at me now but I used to take my Malibu board to Cornwall strapped to the roof of my Triumph Herald convertable and surf the waves at Newquay and surrounding area. The best was at night with all the surfers and families taking their cars onto the beach with head lights on while we surfed then fish n chips on the beach after. My god that takes me back, I was under 11stone with long hair and bermuda shorts, ok i will stop there. Still wear shorts though !!
IT'S CHRISTMAS !!!!!!!!!

I agree about the fladen comment Phil.
About 7 years ago I bought some original fladen plugs from a tackle shop in Whitby.
They were and still are cracking lures. When I first saw some in the bargain shops I thought it was my lucky day until I bought one and compared it to my original ones. No comparison. Like comparing a Rolls Royce to a Lada.

Yep; huge catalogue - the motto is anyone can fish and with such a variety from pocket money to top end it's sad that they are only really judged by the bottom end. Having cherry picked I've got stuff way superior to my old shimano gear and my catch rates against the rapalas haven't dropped thought he lures are clearly of inferior quality in construction...but the amount I smash into rocks and lose on the troll it's so much easier to bear! And many have improvements. there's a j13 copy, pretty crappy plastic and poor finish that is made of glued plastic rather than shaped balsa...it has noisy bearings in it. It seems to outfish the rapala...
not a fan of fixed spool on the reel, mainly because the salt screws them up butt these will be dragge dout next time I'm on a charter for cod as an unsuitable and pretty good test.

ALL CHANGE !! I started to have a play with the Shimano Exage on Xmas day only to find that the fighting drag is rubbish, with all the drag lock up, I could easily turn the spool with very little effort so that was the first thing. The second point was my fault, the spool took 135m of braid so I thought that would be fine and as I did not have my reading glasses to hand in the shop, I took the salesman's word, a mistake was made, the spool only held 70m of 45lb braid.
To cut a long story short, I went back to the shop today and looked at the deeper spooled Exage and again the drag has no real backbone so a little discussion with the manager and I walked out with my original target reel, the Okuma Trio HS 40 which will lock up if I need to and does have the line holding capability and again I got them to sell it at £49.99 instead of the £74.99 so all in all I think I now have it sorted.
The winds here are a nightmare with white horses on the local rivers and lakes so hoping for a break soon to get out.

I'm surprised at that Phil, my small 2500 rear drag shimano almost locks up solid. But to be honest I've used front drag for years now and find the exages drag to be very smooth and to tighten up much more than required, any extra pressure on the line is easy to apply with your index finger. Phil
