While I have been playing around with my new reel, a thought crossed my mind. I always buy steel snoods/links, call them what you like, I cannot thread them through my top rings on the lure rod and to be honest I'm fed up with having to retie the links every time I use the rod so I have been routing through the pike lure gear at the tackle shop to find some smaller fittings without much success.
Thinking cap on, we use a nylon covered stainless steel leader for fly fishing which is knotable and is very hard to get kinks in. So a new approach, for me at any rate. In sea fishing we all use a Gemini Link Clip to connect various things but these are too big for lure or fly fishing, however Gemini do produce a much smaller rig clip designed to have a replaceable hook snood. Now I have used these small clips for years and know how good they are. After connecting a small swivel that feeds through the rings on to the reel braid, I can use these links to connect the steel leader to the main line with another small swivel to the other end. I was also able to find some tiny American Snap Link Clips which sit on the swivel and attach to the lure.
The result is a very flexible steel leader with the smallest fitting that I can find to reduce drag, weed collection and maintain a good presentation of the lure.
Here are a few photo's.
small swivel to the main line
the finished leader
the Gemini rig clip / main line swivel
it will fit any size lure/fly
The components used
AFW Surflon Micro Supreme, wire leader and the various link clips and swivels
the uni knot in the wire leader
To give you an idea of size, the Gemini clip and the American Snap clip are each 15mm long and while fine wire, very strong. I know some of you make your own leaders but I just thought it might have some interest to you guys.
