I have over the past number of weeks been looking into pike flies and methods used in both the US and Scandinavia with some very interesting results. I have started to produce some of these big flies which because of time or high winds have not been tested yet, I hope to correct that this week. Here are some of the patterns. This ' drop hook fire tiger ' uses an articulated shaft with the hook free to move and a metal scull which will be suited to casting from a lure rod as I have been able to do in the garden for shorter distances. It will also have the ability to take a wire trace with a trailing hook for lure rod situations. This diving popper also used the articulated shaft. The fly body is mounted on the hook with the reverse popper head mounted on the articulated shaft to offer much greater movement. This is also a drop hook version but no metal head And the last one is just a shorter version with fixed hook Sizes vary between 8 and 10'' in length. The materials used are new to me and no longer available in the UK as I have taken the remaining stock. This in itself is a problem but I am in touch with the various companies in the US to import the products myself so long term it should not be a problem. Please feel free to comment as I am not totally happy with a couple of aspects but revisions are in my head, I just thought you may be interested so far. Phil

They are big and they are scarey They are very good looking flies Phil. When you look at the size of lures there is no reason why flies should not mirror them only these should have much more movement than a lure. Terry

NICE! That's what I'm talking about! If a light stinger can be added then they will be the dogs nuts! Roach and Perch pattern please bud I'm told white with red/orange belly are the streamer of choice for Sweden Can you make them with upturned hooks? Wondering if that wuld make them weedless

I have limited colours at present Sam but will be hopefully getting some green / chartreuse / orange which will give the range for your idea. There is a possibility of making a weed guard for the hook as it would lose the ability to hook the fish if buried in the body mass. I need some wire and crimps to make the stinger but yes it is very feasible. It is also possible to have both the main hook and stinger on clips from the articulated shaft so that they can be changed at any time but I will need to find some small but strong clips.

There are great Phil. Like the idea of being able to cast them with a lure rod. If you can tie some similar patterns using jig heads or large dumbell weights I would be interested in buying some from you.

The prototype is sat in front of me as we speek. I have done one on a 25grm but I have bought some much lighter jig heads from Kell which are the ones I am going to do next.
All these will be available for sale so no problem there Graham.

You could troll a big fly that no problem on a lure rod as well, would be a good action for deep waters.

Great flies Phil and some good thinking there with the jigs. Flies and jigs are absolutely deadly for pike.
I started experimenting with jigs for pike last year in water up to 25 feet deep and was surprised how well they did !
The hard part is finding the fish - find them , and they can't resist the action of the fly or jig.
Let me know when " Philpot online flies" is open for business !

Thanks Phil, it won't be long my friend, it won't be long. I have been looking at the 'Bombarda floats' that allow a big fly to be cast on a lure rod a long way as the floats can be up to 30grm so the action of a big fly is not restricted to the fly rod. I have to get one and try some tests--------so many tests to do it is certainly keeping me busy.
