I only just noticed Greygoose's thread about Ely on "River Venues" and it looks a good venue and a cracking choice for a meet. I shall be taking a tenner (money, not fish!). Whatever the fishing is like on the day I think you done good young warrior.

Isn't there some sort of boat licence you have to obtain before going on to rivers, or do i just need to have my rod licence with me and money to fish? I would like to be able to get there, i may then be able to get my head around this anchoring up malarky. It goes straight over my head when people try to explain on these forums, i might be able to understand it when i see it in action Neil

'Strictly speaking' you should be a member of the BCU to have what covers virtually navigable waters in England. Although many paddlers do not bother.
It is not my place to condemn or condone anyones behaviour. The one thing I would insist on is indeed the EA rod licence.

;DI will mention it on the other thread, but to do the best for you plastic pirates , I have put down some chopped up herring this evening and will do a couple of times more before we meet up .left it late -and rainy! -stu's note made me think it might not be wise to anounce it to others ! Be very interesting to see the effect it has, will tell everyone on the day where it went down! Chris

Hi stu , the club permission ends just before that, the channel and next pit in is owned by the Enviromental Agency and is a no go. The pit behind is Roswell ,talking to a chap about getting in there, theres a sailing club in there who might object to paddlers so taking it slow.

I think you may be looking at Clay pit and Sailing pit downstream of Ely, if so you are now on the Ely Beet stretch, I'm a member there and they only allow members to boat fish the river due to problems from some visiting boat anglers trolling through bank anglers lines. Their stretch is from Iron Bridge to Sandal Bridge Littleport and the bailiff Colin has a knack of finding unauthorised anglers...lol

What is the total length of the stretch available to us? From what I have seen from the train there is a boatyard (I might be wrong here). Are we able to fish this? On a different vein, does any one have any experience of trolling floats?

Had hoped to fish today but no chance those household jobs are the most important bl*****y thing ever but, late in the day I sneaked out for a paddle and to lay down some more groundbait I time it a bit wrong because I launched and by the time I,d gone fifty yards it was a thunderstorm made for an interesting paddle and certainly washed the yak well ;D , when it had passed I spoke to a couple of bank fishermen , they were getting zander only3- 4lb ish but having to work hard for them, there local knowledge was that zander don,t like rain and its to warm ! They also told me a chap had had a nice pike in the area I,d been putting down some half mackies , I'll have to buy up some more end of day fish to put down tuesday, and a bit more thursday and we;ll see if it does the trick Esoxuk , a mate told me he was walking his dog on the bridge on the pit feeder bit, clay pit?next to EA , and he sat there watching 30lb plus carp rolling, I don,t know if you carp but thought you ought to know, wish EBSS was a bit cheaper, £50 for me and my lad , just found a pit near me with big cats and thats £60 for us , I think I'll sort it next year when he's bigger!

Chris,
Now we are just 5 days away we better start getting organised......
So meet time is 07:30
Is the any chance you can do a screen dump from google maps marking the relevant point....launch, parking, free water, Coopers water, bogs, especially the bogs after a couple of hours on the road I know that will be my first port of call. What bait/lures do you recommend. I think hot spots should only be passed by pm or on the day.
Weather is looking reasonable, may be a bit windy but I guess we can find reasonable shelter if needed.
Most importantly .....do we have to give Daz a ducking after his success in Esthwaite just to bring him back down to ground?

No idea old chum how to do a dump online ! but-- Toilets are at ship lane which is 50 -60 yards from slipway at , Quayside Ely ,CB7 4AU , the toilets are in a pay and display carpark, ship lane carpark CB74BB ,its close but walk 100 yards and its free beside the railway at the end of Willow walk. the free fishing area is from Ely high bridge ( next to the railway station ) downstream to the second railway bridge, after this is coopers AC which will have a representative along to give day tickets or membership if you wish. I will try to find out the cafes around the market, costas etc and there open times so folk can pick up a coffe or whatever as they come through town, its a very small town, market to slipway is maybe 350 yards, there is a tesco with a coffe shop next to the railway station as well, I'll swing by and check their times tuesday evening . I make sure I'm there early doors and anyone wanting my mob jus ask and I'll pm you. I even checked around the slipway for crap today, much to the amusment of others ,removed some rubbish and pulled out two bikes and a trolley from the river! There's a nice clear open area now to put out yaks ready, and maybe a photo op? See you all soon!

Then just select the Text Icon.....do your writing in the appropriate places- Save as Ely or whatever then upload it to PhotoBucket and post it as you would a photo....
That's great Chris....mmmnnnn Costa coffee and a lunchtime natter sound good.

Me and massive attended the src course on sunday and the very same question was asked regarding use on rivers the instructor did say it should not be a problem, However it is illegal to use them on terra firma so stay afloat a lot of the replies on AA seemed to be aimed at not holding the appropriate licenses which i assume we all do . I shall take mine anyway just incase

I am sure many boaters must use radios for communiction with locks on the likes of the tidal Trent or calling marinas.
