As some of you may or may not know the fens can be a pretty barren place in the winter and if the weathers not quite playing ball not very pleasant at all, so rather than put people off visiting again after there first trip here I`m thinking that Ely will possibly be the best venue for a FIRST meet and what with the increasing numbers and ease of parking and with the possibilities for refreshments it will / should make for a comfortable first contact ;D

Its a bloody site colder than the sea in winter I know that , but you don,t get any boats then and no swell in your lap either

Ely sounds a good call. I haven't fished or paddled there, but have passed through on the train many times and the view of the river, town and cathedral are quite spectacular, especially with the winter sun setting behind the cathedral. Actually,do you think I am being a bit too "John Wilson" here?
Good choice, that's all I'm saying.

Just been on the phone to the Coopers AC chairman/organiser ,its only a little club, he confirmed kayak fishing ok and asked if he could come and have a look at our yaks on the morning, hes had a go in a friends yak and fancies taking a look at it, I think I converted him ! He will be there in the morning to give day tickets £5 or join for the year £10 . I have also have been talking to the London Angling Association about the ten mile bank, a long wide section of the ouse that you,ll only see half a dozen anglers on, but they wouldn,t go for kayaks on it gave a load of tosh about there insurance etc. never mind I,m talking to another club as well, I think fenbboystu got a thumbs up from KKAA ,good waters but hard to launch.

If the london angling association are worried about their insurance with kayaks on the water how do they go about the cruisers that are on there stretch constantly in the summer as no doubt some of them fish without seeking permission ?? Chris is right the KLAA are ok with us kayaking on their waters which are navigable they only stipulate that you must hold a season ticket purchased in advance :)As he said the worst problem is getting on the water. I also contacted the middle level commisioners who confirmed its ok to paddle and fish there waters ( with the controlling angling clubs permission ) which is rather a lot and includes most of the KLAA waters. Good news on getting the Coopers AC on board chris.

Excellent news and well done lads.
As Chris says if there is a right of navigation then we can paddle there and do not need the clubs consent. Further if they allow 'boats' to fish then we are a boat.
However LAA have had issues with paddlers, ( not kayak anglers) on their stretch of the Hampshire Avon which has been high profile and unresolved. So they are are naturally a little wary when paddlers are mentioned and reluctant to commit themselves I suppose and st a precedent however the Ten Mile Bank is totally different to the Avon.

I think the majority of cruisers do,or try,a bit of fishing on all of the rivers I see moored up boats all through the summer, very few even have a rod licence but if you mention it, or ask are they in the local club or have a day ticket they look at you like you want to beast thier dog! No bailiff bothers them, fair enough thier passing through but when you ask about piking on an empty river in winter ??, the Avon thing got a lot of press in fresh water fishing mags.Small steps I think, you do get noticed, become a talking point and thats what spreads the interest in what you do ,how you do it and then "yes you can fish our waters" ! local clubs all know each other and worries are eased, thats how I look at it !

You are right if we can get positive feed back from one club that can be a reference for another.
What many are scared of is idiots copying us but not having the same standards.

I agree that a lot of people hear kayak and think its just people messing about doing a bit of fishing until they actually see how seriously we take our safety and care for our catch and the environment its probably going to be a tough struggle until as you rightly say word starts to spread that we are not just fools on the water, anglers after all are one of the best early indicators of potential problems on a water.
